BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The Edinboro football team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 9-6 victory over Bloomsburg on Saturday at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium.
The Scots came out and methodically marched the ball down the field using 19 plays to go 59 yards and eat nearly nine minutes off the clock. Edinboro converted a pair of fourth downs on the drive to move the ball to the Husky 12-yard line. A 9-yard sack pushed the Scots into second-and-19 and the Edinboro drive stalled out.
Tanner Bruzda's 33-yard field goal attempt was no good leaving the game scoreless.
The Huskies moved 38 yards on their first drive, including Justin Wolfe's 19-yard run and Cowan Ruhland's 22-yard completion to Xavier Diaz on third-and-16, but
Montrice Webster and
Jaden Branch combined on a third-down tackle for loss to force a punt.
On the first play of the second quarter,
Montrice Webster wrapped up Ruhland and stripped the ball on the option play.
Logan Dexter jumped on the loose ball giving the Fighting Scots the ball at the Bloomsburg 38. It took just three plays for Edinboro to turn the turnover into points. After a Dinkins rushed for no gain, Marchitelli hit
Jeremiah Neeley for 10 yards and a first down. On the next play, Dinkins bounced the run to his right and ran 28 yards for the touchdown putting the Scots ahead 6-0 at 13:22. Dinkins was stopped short on the 2-point conversion.
The Scots' defense followed with two three-and-outs, including pass breakups by
Elijah Wentz and
Sunday Ikegwuonu, while their next two possessions ended in punts. The Huskies later drove from the Scots' 45 to the 3, but
Logan Dexter stopped Declan Clancy for a loss on third down before Peter Kashynski made a 20-yard field goal with 28 seconds on left in the first half to make it 6-3. The Scots took advantage of the final 28 seconds of the half after the field goal. Marchitelli found Neeley for 30 yards and then a pass interference penalty moving the ball to the Bloomsburg 16 with 3 seconds left. Bruzda nailed the 33-yard field goal as time expired to send the Scots into halftime ahead 9-3.
The Huskies started the second half at their 9, but Declan Clancy converted third-and-12 with a 32-yard run to keep the drive alive. The Huskies kept the drive moving with another Clancy first-down run and a 15-yard Scots personal-foul penalty, and Peter Kashynski later finished it with a 41-yard field goal at 9:27 to make it 9-6.
The Fighting Scots moved from their 25 to the Huskies' 30 on the next series, with
Bo Swartz running for one first down and later finding
Jacob Coburn for 25 yards on third-and-7, but the drive ended on a fourth-down incompletion intended for Neeley at 3:31. The Huskies punted after three plays on their next possession, and the Scots reached their own 37 before the quarter ended with the Scots ahead 9-6.
After Schlief punted to open the fourth quarter, the Huskies moved from their 40 to the Scots' 33 behind a fourth-down run by Eli Zimmerman and a 10-yard carry by Declan Clancy, but the Scots pushed the drive backward with tackles for loss by
Nick Rossi and Wentz before a punt pinned the Scots at their 5. The Scots picked up two first downs on the ensuing possession, including a Dinkins 7-yard run and a Huskies pass-interference penalty, but the drive ended with another Schlief punt, and the Huskies' next series reached the Scots' 42 before a false start, a
Ty Reali breakup and another incompletion led to a punt.
The Scot offense took more time off the clock after starting at their own 30. Marchitelli found Neeley for 11 yards on third-and-6, but
Antwan Ceasar fumbled at the Scots' 46 and Dylan Clair recovered for the Huskies at the1:08 mark.
Jaden Branch dropped Cowan Ruhland for a 3-yard loss on third down and the Huskies' fourth-and-13 pass fell incomplete at 0:23, allowing Marchitelli to kneel out the final snap of a 9-6 win.
The defense held the Huskies to 171 total yards and 10 first downs, while the Scots ran for 118 yards and added 147 through the air.
Dinkins rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and added three catches for 23 yards. Neeley caught four passes for a team-high 58 yards. Webster matched the team high with seven tackles and forced a fumble. Dexter finished with five tackles and recovered a fumble.
Declan Clancy rushed 15 times for 80 yards. Peter Kashynski converted both field-goal attempts, including a 41-yarder. Garrett Garcia recorded a team-high 11 tackles. Dylan Clair finished with eight tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
The Scots return to Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday when they host West Chester at 12 p.m.
