Edinboro University Athletics

Aubrey Kelly joined the Edinboro football staff last year, taking over as the defensive backs coach in mid-August.

Kelly joined Scott Browning’s staff after serving as the defensive backs coach at Millersville for the previous seven years. During those seven campaigns, Kelly’s secondary totaled 57 interceptions and his players finished as the team’s leading tacklers four of the seven seasons. Three players earned first team All-PSAC East honors and another earned second team recognition during his tenure.

Kelly is no stranger to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. He was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Clarion from 1994-97. That included coaching Kim Niedbala, the man he replaced at Edinboro. He helped the Golden Eagles to the 1996 PSAC Championship, the NCAA Northeast Regional championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II semifinals. Clarion won the 1996 Lambert Cup.

Prior to joining the Millersville staff, Kelly served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Indiana State in 2005 and ‘06. In 2006, he was selected as one of 25 coaches to attend the NCAA Expert Coaches Academy in Miami, Fla.

In addition, Kelly was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Delaware State in 2004; the offensive coordinator and quarterback/receivers coach at Elizabeth City State in 2003; the interim head coach/defensive coordinator/secondary coach at Norfolk State in 2002; and the head football coach at Newport News Apprentice from 1998-2001.
He also was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Salisbury State from 1990-93, working with current Edinboro defensive coordinator Wayne Bradford.

Kelly began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State in 1986, coaching the receivers and tight ends coach. He then moved on to Texas State University, where he was an assistant from 1987-89, working with the receivers, tight ends, and the secondary.

In addition to his college coaching experience, Kelly served National Football League Summer Fellowships with the Houston Oilers in 1989 and the Washington Redskins in 1990.

Kelly received his bachelor of science degree in Business Administration/Hotel Management from James Madison in May 1985. He completed work on his master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies of Education from Southwest Texas State in August 1989. He resides in Edinboro and has four daughters -- Aisoylina (22), Anna (20), Aubrey (17), Alexis (16), Aidahlia (15)
