The year before the Rams rode the arm of All-American John Skelton, who went on to become a fifth round draft choice of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals in the 2010 NFL draft.  Under Volk’s tutelage, Skelton became Fordham’s all-time leading passer, throwing for 9,923 yards and 69 touchdowns, also a school record.

In 2009 the Fordham offense led the NCAA FCS in total offense, averaging 488.9 ypg. while also ranking second in passing offense and 30th in scoring offense.

In 2008 Fordham ranked second in the Patriot League and 27th in the NCAA FCS in passing offense and was third in the conference in total offense.  The Rams were also second in passing offense in 2007, as well.  The 2007 squad won the Patriot League championship and competed in the FCS Playoffs.

Volk joined Fordham after serving as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State in 2004 and ’05.  He was the wide receiver coach the first season, then took over as the quarterback’s coach in 2005.  In 2005 he helped freshman quarterback Aubrey Norris earn NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors while wide receiver Andre Smith earned the award in 2004.  The Blue Devils won the Northeast Conference Championship both years.

Volk began his coaching career at Division II powerhouse Grand Valley State in 2000, coaching the defensive backs as a graduate assistant under current Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly.  The next year he moved to Louisiana Tech, where he spent three seasons as an offensive graduate assistant coach.  In 2001 he helped the team to the Western Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the Crucial.com Humanitarian Bowl.

A four-year letterman at Hope College, Volk graduated in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology.  He led Hope to two conference championships while playing defensive back.  He also has master’s degrees in Sports Science and also in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Louisiana Tech.  He is single and resides in Edinboro.
