A former Mercyhurst Prep standout from Erie, Pa., Nickson was part of the top-ranked Slippery Rock defense in 2011 is ranked No. 6 in unassisted tackles in SRU history with 159.
 
"I am excited to announce the hiring of Jayson Nickson," said Nulph, who enters the 2020-2021 academic year as his first with the Fighting Scots. "He is a tremendous addition to our staff and I am excited he is coming home to the area! Our young men will benefit on and off the field under his leadership."
 
Nickson went on to win back-to-back Continental Indoor Football League championships in 2013 and 2014 with the Erie Explosion. He was named CIFL all-conference defensive back in 2014.
 
As safeties coach at University of Findlay from 2016-2018, Nickson helped guide two all-conference safeties in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, as well as one All-American. The Oilers defense appeared in the second round of the NCAA playoffs and enjoyed a 10-3 season in 2017.
 
In 2018, Nickson coached defensive backs at Marietta College and the Pioneers went 7-3, the most wins for the program in 22 years. The defense included one all-Ohio Athletic Conference defensive back, Javi Zaragoza, who led the conference in interceptions. As a whole the defense led the conference in interceptions with 14, all by defensive backs.
 
Nickson's 2019 season was highlighted by decreases in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, third-down conversions, fourth down conversions and red zone touchdown percentage. The defense included one all-conference and one all-region corner.
 
Nickson also held responsibilities at Marietta of running scout team, managing game film, food and travel coordinator, head JV coach, member of dining committee and was lead advisor for Brother 2 Brother.
 
Nickson graduated from Slippery Rock University in 2011 with a Bachelor's of Science in Safety and Environmental Management.
