Joe Wanson

Wide Receivers/Special Teams Coordinator
3rd Year
Edinboro '09

Joe Wanson joined the Edinboro coaching staff as a full-time assistant in July of 2015. The former Fighting Scot quarterback worked with the quarterbacks and wide receivers in his first season on the coaching staff.  He took over the wide receivers the following year and will work with the wideouts once again this year. In addition, he will serve as the special teams coordinator for the second straight season.

Under Wanson’s guidance, Edinboro has enjoyed standout performances by the wide receiving corps. In 2015, Darren Massey set school records for catches in a game, season, and career while earning second team All-PSAC West honors.
The 2016 Fighting Scots had three receivers haul in more than 60 receptions and a fourth exceed 50 catches. James Clark caught 66 passes, with Ta’Nauz Gregory adding 63 receptions and.Alex Caratelli 62, three of the top six figures all-time to that point. Jordan Williams finished with 54 receptions, which also ranked in the top ten. Gregory was named the Football Gazette Division II Freshman of the Year and the PSAC West Freshman of the Year.
A year ago, Clark earned All-American honors while breaking Massey’s record for single-game receptions and season receptions (95), along with yards receiving (1,213). He led the PSAC and ranked in Division II in receptions per game...

Wanson played quarterback for the Fighting Scots from 2005-09. A former standout at DuBois High School, he had the misfortune of playing behind record-setting quarterback Trevor Harris. However, he enjoyed a moment of glory when he made his lone career start in the 2009 regular season finale at Millersville and paced the Fighting Scots to a 28-25 win that clinched a berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

Wanson was named the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts, completing 17 of 33 passes for 231 yards and 3 TDs. For his career, he saw action in 23 games, completing 48 of 102 passes for 580 yards with 5 TDs.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education-Social Studies in May 2009, Wanson began his coaching career as an assistant coach at McDowell High School in 2010. He served as an assistant coach with the Trojans for five years under head coaches Mark Soboleski and Brad Orlando.

12098Wanson is considered an outstanding young offensive coach, serving as the offensive coordinator in 2014 for a McDowell team which finished 8-5 and reached the PIAA playoffs. He previously served as a coach of the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and defensive backs, along with being the head coach of the junior varsity program.

McDowell posted a winning record in each of Wanson’s five seasons, including reaching the Quad A state quarterfinals in 2012 and ’13. The 2010 and ’11 editions participated in the WPIAL playoffs, finishing with 7-3 and 8-3 records, respectively.

In  addition, Wanson served as the head coach of the North team in the District 10 North vs. South All-Star game twice. He was an assistant baseball coach at Central Tech High School in Erie in 2010-11.

Wanson has teaching experience in the Millcreek, Erie, and General McLane School Districts, along with Union City High School.   While at Edinboro, he was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Wanson is single and resides in Waterford, Pa.
