Former Gannon standout Matt Astorino will serve as the assistant defensive backs and safeties coach in his first coaching position. A well-known local athlete at General McLane High School, as well, Astorino is beginning work on his master’s degree in Counseling at Edinboro.
Astorino appeared in 43 games as a member of the Golden Knights, starting 26 contests at safety. He was a member of the 2014 Gannon squad which shared the PSAC West title and ended the year with a 9-2 record, matching the school record for wins. For his career, he totaled 150 tackles, with 3 interceptions and 11 passes broken up.
A starter in eight of 11 games as a senior, Astorino posted career highs both in tackles (53) and tackles for losses (7). He had 47 tackles, with 4 tackles for losses, 5 passes broken up, and an interception in 2014. In 2013, he recorded 42 tackles with a pair of interceptions and 3 passes broken up.
As a prepster, Astorino was an all-region performer at General McLane as a defensive back and running back, helping the Lancers to a 40-9 record during his career.
Astorino becomes a second generation coach at Edinboro, following in the footsteps of his father Gary. An outstanding wrestler at Edinboro, Gary was a long-time assistant wrestling coach for the Fighting Scots. In addition, his brother Drew was a standout at Penn State as a defensive back.
Astorino resides in Edinboro and is single. An outstanding student, he was a four-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Social Studies/Secondary Education from Gannon in May 2016.
