Women's Swimmers Open Season with Wins over Gannon, Millersville

EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2013) -- The Edinboro women's swimming team opened the 2013-14 season with a pair of wins on Friday, defeating Gannon 74-39 and Millersville 98-15. The meet took place at McComb Fieldhouse.

Alexis Berdine and freshman Goezde Tekin paced the Fighting Scots with four wins apiece.  Berdine swam a leg of the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays, along with touching first in the 50-yard backstroke (27.97) and 100-yard backstroke (59.70). Her time in the 100-yard backstroke was a PSAC qualifying time.

In her first meet as a Fighting Scot, Tekin was on the 200-yard medley relay and also finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (58.36), 100-yard freestyle (54.14) and 100-yard IM (59.99).  The first two times qualified her for PSAC's.

Holly Stein and Staci Schrecongost were double winners.  Stein swam a leg of the 200-yard medley relay and won the 50-yard breaststroke (30.98). Stein's second place finish of 1"09.71 in the 100-yard breaststroke also qualified her for PSAC's.  Schrecongost claimed titles in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard freestyle (1:58.00, PSAC qualifier).  Maria Tarbell was the winner of the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.15.

Several other swimmers posted PSAC qualifying times.  They included:

Mary Rosati -- 500-yard freestyle (1st, 5:18.40); 200-yard freestyle (2nd, 1:59.97)
Julie Moretti -- 100-yard freestyle (3rd, 54.50)   

The Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday morning. They will meet Indiana(Pa.) and Gannon at the Spire Institute in Geneva, OH. The tri-meet gets underway at 10 a.m.
