ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 27, 2013) – The Edinboro volleyball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Friday afternoon with a four-game win over West Chester, followed by a three-game sweep of Cheyney. The wins over the two Eastern Division squads took place at Gannon's Hammermill Center as part of the PSAC Crossover. Edinboro is now 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West, leaving the Fighting Scots just two wins shy of last year's win total. West Chester fell to 8-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. Cheyney is now 2-8 and 0-3, respectively.
The Fighting Scots handed West Chester their first loss of the season, prevailing by scores of 25-23, 25-21, 22-25 and 25-9. After three tight games the Fighting Scots dominated the fourth game. Leading 3-2, Edinboro went on an 11-1 run that included seven straight points at one point, taking a 14-3 lead. The Fighting Scots would close out the match with the final seven points.
Megan Branchick led Edinboro with 18 kills, with a .469 hitting percentage.
Latoya Hutchinson added eight kills.
Haley Marett contributed 19 digs and four service aces, with
Tabitha Meeks showing 11 digs.
Katie Felix totaled 21 assists and
Nicole Brunot had 10.
Edinboro needed just 65 minutes to subdue Cheyney by scores of 25-11, 25-18, and 25-16.
Hailey Kessler had a team-high nine kills, with
Breanna Gardner adding seven. Meeks finished with 16 digs, while Brunot had 15 assists and four service aces. Felix pitched in with 11 assists.
The Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday, facing Kutztown at 12:30 p.m. and East Stroudsburg at 3:30 p.m.
