CLARION, Pa. (January 25) – The Edinboro women's swimming team defeated Clarion for the first time in program history on Saturday, 146-143. The dual meet occurred at Clarion and improved the Scots record to 9-0 in dual meets this year. The Golden Eagles fell to 0-3.
Going into the final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, Edinboro led 140-132. In order to win the Fighting Scots needed just one of their three relay teams to finish second place or higher and they received a second place finish from the quartet of
Holly Stein,
Julia Lockmyer,
Jessica Abbott, and
Alexis Berdine. They finished in a time of 1:41.07 earning four points and securing the win for the Scots.
Goezde Tekin was among two Fighting Scots with two victories. She finished first in the 200 yard butterfly (2:08.77) and the 100 yard butterfly (58.86). The freshman also added a second place finish in the 200 yard individual medley (2:11.92). The German native also finished second in the 200 yard medley relay with Berdine, Stein, and
Julie Moretti.
Staci Schrecongost was the other Scot to pick-up multiple victories. The junior tallied wins in the 200 yard freestyle (1:59.31) and 500 yard freestyle (5:22.98).
The only other Edinboro swimmers to place first were
Mary Rosati and Moretti. Rosati won the 1,650 yard freestyle with a time of 18:40.44. The freshman also added a second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:25.13. Moretti won the 100 yard freestyle (54.40) but also added a second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (2:00.50).
Berdine tallied two more second place finishes to finish with four on the day. The senior was the runner-up in the 100 yard backstroke (59.52) and 200 yard backstroke (2:12.90).
Stein,
Maria Tarbell, and
Julia Lockmyer each added individual second place efforts as well to help the Scots. Stein finished the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:25.94, Tarbell the 200 yard butterfly in 2:14.13, and Lockmyer the 50 yard freestyle in 25.90.
The Fighting Scots will now have close to a month off before the PSAC Championships. Those are scheduled to take place from February 20-23 in York, Pa.
