500! Swank Reaches Milestone in 65-58 Victory over Millersville

EDINBORO, Pa. (December 17, 2014) -- Standout swingman Laurel Lindsay nearly stole the spotlight from head coach Stan Swank on Wednesday night, but in the end the evening belonged to the veteran mentor. Edinboro defeated Millersville 65-58 in a PSAC contest at McComb Fieldhouse, presenting Swank with his 500th career win. The Fighting Scots have now won four straight games to improve to7-3 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC. Millersville is now 6-4 and 4-2, respectively.

Swank is now in his 28th season at the helm of the Fighting Scots and tonight's victory boosts his record to 500-276. He is the all-time leader in career victories in the PSAC. Oddly enough, the win came against one of his closest friends in the profession and the coach with the second-most wins in the PSAC (451), Millersville's Mary Fleig.

"It's a win and that's what's important," related Swank afterwards following the presentation of the game ball by Vice President of Student Affairs Kahan Sablo and Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner. "It's a nice accomplishment. I guess I'm more interested that we're 4-2 in the conference now and getting ready to take off and do good things with that. Well, now we start another 500," he quipped.

He lauded his team, as well. "500 wins just means I'm old. What it really means is that I've had a lot of great players like you guys," he told his team. "People that play hard to get it accomplished."?

As for Lindsay, the 6'0" graduate student recorded just the fifth triple-double in Edinboro history, finishing the night with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Teammate Valerie Majewski had a triple-double a year ago and assistant coach Callie Wheeler (Callie Iorfido) had two. On Tuesday night Lindsay dished out 13 assists in a win over Cheyney.

After leading 29-25 at the half, Edinboro opened up the second half with a 12-3 run to go up 41-28 with 14:32 remaining. Lauren Hippo hit a pair of 3-pointers and Nicole Johnson scored a pair of buckets during the burst.

Laurel Lindsay posted the fifth triple-double in school history.
Edinboro's lead would grow to 16 points at 56-40 with 7:33 to play when Hippo hit her third three of the half.

The Marauders refused to fold, however, using a 10-2 run to make it a five-point game with 3:41 left at 58-53 on Aunjel Van Brakle's layup.

Lindsay answered with a layup after Aignee' Freeland hauled in an offensive rebound to make it 60-53. Hope Mancini followed with a pair of free throws to boost the margin to 62-53 with 2:10 to play.

Millersville had on last gasp as Van Brakle made one of two at the line and Courtney Hinnant made a pair to make it a five-point game once again at 63-58. Just 16 seconds remained, however, and with seven second to play Hippo converted a pair of free throws for the final score.

Hippo was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures with 14 points, adding 7 rebounds. The junior made 3-of-6 3-pointers and was 5-for-6 at the line.

Van Brakle led the Marauders with 12 points and 9 rebounds, with leading scorer Carly Gallagher suffering an off-shooting night to finish with 10 points. The fifth-year senior came in averaging 18.0 ppg. but was just 4-of-16 from the floor.

Edinboro shot 38.6 percent from the floor (22-of-57), rebounding from a 31.3 percent figure in the first half (10-of-32) to make 12-of-25 shots in the second half (48.0 pct.). The Fighting Scots made 9-of-23 3-pointers and were 12-of-15 from the free throw line. Millersville was limited to 34.4 percent shooting from the floor (21-of-61), and was 3-of-16 from beyond the arc and 13-of-22 at the line.

Millersville won the battle of the boards, 42-to-36, and forced Edinboro into 16 turnovers compared to committing 13 turnovers.

Swank will look for win number 501 on Saturday, December 20 when the Fighting Scots travel to Shippensburg.
