Edinboro Records 3-0 Sweeps Over Charleston (WV), West Virginia State

(September 12, 2014) – The Edinboro volleyball team earned a pair of 3-0 wins over Charleston (WV) (25-19, 25-11, 25-12) and West Virginia State (25-19, 25-18, 28-26) on day one of the Presidents State Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Crossover on Friday afternoon. The event is hosted by Gannon University. The Fighting Scots improved to 4-2 on the season, while Charleston (WV) dropped to 1-5 and West Virginia State fell to 2-4.
 
The Fighting Scots recorded back-to-back 3-0 victories for the first time since 2012, when Edinboro posted consecutive sweeps over Cheyney and Kutztown in a PSAC Crossover. The Fighting Scots also finished the 2013 with a 3-0 win over Clarion, before blanking Adelphi 3-0 in the 2014 season opener.
 
Edinboro used a balanced attack to defeat Charleston (WV) with five players tallying at least five kills. Jen Gruber, Sydney Trathen and Challen Litwiler each posted seven kills to lead the Fighting Scots, while Trathen also posted a team-high 18 assists. Haley Marett paced Edinboro with 17 digs in the win, and Katie Felix added 12 assists.
 
The Fighting Scots bested the Golden Eagles in kills by a margin of 41-12 in the match. Edinboro's .305 hitting percentage represents its highest total since posting a .403 hitting percentage in the win over Cheyney on October 6, 2012, also the last time Edinboro recorded back-to-back sweeps.
 
In the second game of the day, the Fighting Scots jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-19 and 25-18 victories in the first two sets. Trailing 10-4 in the third set, Edinboro used a 6-0 run fueled by two kills by Trathen to even the score at 10-10.
 
The Fighting Scots took their first lead of the game at 12-11, and neither team would lead by more than three points for the remainder of the match.
 
Facing set point at 25-24 after a service error and an attack error, Edinboro outscored the Yellow Jackets 4-1 to earn the 28-26 set triumph and 3-0 sweep.  
 
Tabitha Meeks led the Fighting Scots with a season-high 13 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. Trathen dished out team-high 24 assists, followed by Felix with 12 assists. Marett tallied 16 digs to lead Edinboro.
