Edinboro Drops Opener to Gannon in Overtime 2-1

Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, Pa. (September 4, 2014) - The Edinboro women's soccer team opened its 2014 season narrowly losing to Gannon in overtime, 2-1. Justine Rodrigues scored the game-winner six minutes into the first overtime to move Gannon to 1-0-0 to start the season. The Fighting Scots fall to 0-1-0 to begin their 2014 campaign.

Edinboro's Jansen Hartmann had the first scoring chance of the game when she delivered a strong strike that was deflected away by Gannon goalkeeper Shannon Differ out of bounds just under two minutes into the game. That led to a corner kick for Becca Costello who put it into the box for what initially seemed to be a goal off the foot of Alex Brown, but she was flagged for offside.

Edinboro celebrates after Ashley DeVito's goal.
Gannon struck first at the 14:24 mark. Rodrigues drove down the left side of the field and kicked the ball into the box from 10 yards out. Scots defender Shannon Regan was standing near the goal line and the ball deflected off her into the net.

Shortly after Hartmann and Costello each had chances on the other end but Hartmann's shot was blocked and Costello's sailed wide in the 17th and 18th minutes, respectively.

The Fighting Scots had another opportunity with less than two minutes to play in the half. Lauralee Clements put a shot on goal that was mishandled by Differ about 10 yards outside of the goal. Ashley Mutkus corralled the ball but missed wide after Differ was able to get a piece of it. The subsequent corner led to a header by Clements that went high.

Edinboro struck early in the second half. After earning a corner kick a minute into the frame, Grace Kereky nearly scored on a header that hit the post that led to a shot by Brown which was deflected out of play by Differ. The following corner kick by Costello connected with Ashley DeVito for a goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the 47th minute.

The Fighting Scots continued to fire shots at the goal. They finished with 17 shots with six on goal at the end of regulation. It was the Lady Knights that had the best second half opportunity following DeVito's goal. Sammy Valloud took a shot on net that Kelly snagged out of the air with a diving catch during the 85th minute.

The lone overtime period was quiet for the first three minutes. Gannon then controlled the next three minutes, firing off three shots including Rodrigues game-winner. The senior dribbled the ball into the middle and shot from 15 yards that found the back right of the net.

DeVito scored her first goal since the Bloomsburg game last year on September 24, 2013. The senior defender/midfielder has now scored in back-to-back home openers after scoring against Shippensburg last season in a 3-0 victory.
