Edinboro Sweeps Adelphi 3-0 to Open 2014 Campaign

Box Score (New/Sortable Format) CLARION, Pa. (September 5, 2014) – The Edinboro volleyball team began the 2014 season on a positive note, topping Adelphi 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-14  and 25-22 on Friday afternoon at the Tony Banner Invitational hosted by Clarion University. The Fighting Scots came out victorious in their season opener for the seventh time in eight seasons.
 
Jen Gruber paced the Edinboro attack and matched a career-high with nine kills, while Tabitha Meeks followed with eight kills and a .467 hitting percentage. Gruber also added eight digs in the contest.
 
Fighting Scot newcomer Sydney Trathen dished out a team-high 25 assists to go along with six digs in her Edinboro debut.  Libero Haley Marett led the Fighting Scots with 17 digs in the victory.
 
Edinboro extended its lead to 10 points at 23-13 in the first set on a kill by Trathen, before the Fighting Scots finished off the Panthers with kills by Meeks and Maria Concheck for a 25-14 set win.
 
Edinboro gained a 2-0 advantage after defeating Adelphi 25-14 again in the second set. The Panthers cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 17-16 in the third game, before Edinboro outscored Adelphi 8-6 to seal the 3-0 sweep.  
 
Haley Blunt led the Panthers with five kills and Megan Manierski paced Adelphi with 11 assists.
 
The Fighting Scots return to action tomorrow, Saturday, September 6 with a pair of matches at the Tony Banner Invitational at Clarion University. Edinboro takes on Walsh at 11 a.m. and Wayne State at 3 p.m. in Clarion, Pa.
