EDINBORO, Pa. (January 17, 2015) - The Edinboro women's basketball team had its hands full on Saturday afternoon when Clarion visited McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots won 64-59 despite shooting 20-for-64 (31.3 percent) from the field. The Scots forced 18 turnovers and capitalized with 28 points off turnovers. Edinboro improved its record to 12-5 overall this year and 9-4 in the PSAC West while the Golden Eagles move to 1-16 and 0-12 in conference.
After Edinboro got out to a 21-14 advantage in the first half, Clarion responded with an 11-0 run. Jen Straw scored the first five points of the run starting with a layup at the 8:01 mark. Tania Holmes added four points during that stretch that saw the Golden Eagles take their largest lead of the game ahead 25-21 with 4:50 remaining in the opening frame.

Lauren Hippo scored in double
figures for the tenth straight game.The Fighting Scots answered with a run of their own to close out the first half.
Lauren Hippo made a 3-pointer with 3:48 left in the first half to spark a 12-2 run.
Valerie Majewski then made two layups and
Laurel Lindsay scored the final five points of the half to give Edinboro a 33-27 lead at halftime.
Edinboro extended its lead to as much as eight points leading 35-27 with 18:47 to play. Clarion would inch its way back into the game with an 8-1 run shortly after. Holmes made two 3-pointers and Amesha Harden-Pullium capped off the run with a layup to make it 36-35 with 16:16 showing on the clock.
Hippo retorted with six straight points to extend the Fighting Scots lead back to seven points. Edinboro led 42-35 with 15:09 remaining.
The Fighting Scots fell into a rut following a
Hope Mancini layup at the 14:17 mark. Majewski would be the only Scot to make a field goal in the following eight minutes and 46 seconds as the team shot 2-for-10 from the floor and 0-for-3 on 3-pointers with three turnovers over that stretch. During that time, Clarion would recapture the lead. The Golden Eagles led 52-50 with 5:45 to play.
Hippo ended the Scots drought with a 3-pointer to take back the lead with 5:31 showing on the clock. The two teams would trade field goals in the next minute until Edinboro went on a 9-5 run to end the game, five of those points coming at the free throw line.
Edinboro held an 18-10 advantage in turnovers including outscoring Clarion 28-8 in points off turnovers. The Fighting Scots also outrebounded the Golden Eagles 41-36.
The 31.3 shooting percentage for the Scots was their lowest in a victory in the last three years. The last time Edinboro neared that mark in a victory was when they shot 18-for-55 (32.7 percent) in a 57-45 win at Indiana (Pa.) on February 20, 2013.
Clarion finished the game shooting 24-for-53 (45.3 percent). The Golden Eagles also shot better on 3-pointers, making 4-of-10 (40 percent) of their 3-point attempts. The Fighting Scots, who entered the game first in the nation in 3-point percentage shooting 41.6 percent, shot 4-for-18 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc today.
Edinboro outscored Clarion 20-7 at the free throw line.
Majewski led the Fighting Scots with 18 points. She shot 7-for-16 from the field, 1-for-5 on 3-pointers, and 3-for-4 at the charity stripe. The senior guard added four assists and three steals.
Hippo scored 16 points to go along with six rebounds. The junior guard/forward shot 5-for-11 from the floor, 3-for-6 on 3-pointer attempts, and a perfect 3-for-3 on free throws. Hippo is one made 3-pointer from tying Renee' Brown for tenth all-time at 94 career 3-pointers made.
Laurel Lindsay being honored by Stan Swank before the game with
a game ball for reaching 1,000 career points.Lindsay had a big game despite a poor shooting effort on her 23
rd birthday. The graduate student guard/forward shot 2-for-14 from the field and 0-for-4 on 3-pointers but went 9-for-10 at the free throw line. Lindsay also dished out eight assists and pulled down eight rebounds. She moved into fourth place in career assists (456) passing Samantha Reimer and Jessica Rowe and also passed Pam Artman for 27
th all-time in scoring (1,030 points). Lindsay also received a game ball before the game for becoming the 29
th member in school history to score 1,000 points on January 10 at Gannon.
Nicole Johnson rounded out the quartet of Fighting Scots to score in double figures. The sophomore forward made 4-for-8 from the field and 2-for-5 at the charity stripe to finish with 10 points and eight rebounds. The 10 points were a season-high for Johnson.
The Golden Eagles were led by Holmes. She finished 7-for-17 from the field including 3-for-7 on 3-pointers and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. The junior guard added seven rebounds and three steals, the former being a game-high from Clarion and the latter being the only three steals in the game for the Golden Eagles.
Harden-Pullium and Delrika Jones-Carey were the only other two Clarion players to score in double figures. Harden-Pullium scored 17 points and dished out a team-high six assists. Jones-Carey finished with 14 points and four rebounds.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Edinboro while Clarion's loss extended its losing streak to 13 straight games.
Edinboro now has a week off until its next game at Pitt-Johnstown on January 24 at 1:00 p.m. The Lady Cats play No. 17 Indiana (Pa.) later tonight.
