Fighting Scots Dictate First Half, Win Eighth Straight Game 74-50 versus Lock Haven

EDINBORO, Pa. (January 7, 2015) - The Edinboro women's basketball team continued its impressive run as of late with a 74-50 victory against Lock Haven at home on Wednesday night. The Fighting Scots 16-0 first half run carried them to a 34-17 halftime lead. It was the eighth straight victory for the Scots as they improve to 11-3 overall and 8-2 in the PSAC West. The Lady Eagles fall to 4-9 overall and 3-6 in the PSAC East.

Ahead 5-4 with 17:33 remaining in the opening half, Edinboro scored 16 unanswered points that would give the Fighting Scots a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. Aignee' Freeland began the run with a layup at the 17:19 mark and went onto score 10 points during the run. The junior forward/center scored the last points of the run on a layup to establish a 21-4 lead with 10:17 to play in the first half. Lauren Hippo and Laurel Lindsay each made a 3-pointer to score the other six Edinboro points.

Lock Haven shot 0-for-6 from the floor and committed six turnovers during the Edinboro run. The Scots shot 7-for-12 during that six-minute and 32-second stretch.

At halftime, Edinboro shot 15-for-31 (48.4 percent) from the field and 3-for-6 (50.0 percent) on 3-pointers while the Lock Haven shot 8-for-26 (30.8 percent) from the floor and 0-for-4 on 3-pointers. The Lady Eagles also committed nine turnovers to the Fighting Scots four turnovers.

It was the first time this season Edinboro had held an opposing team to under 20 points in a half. The last time the Scots did so was at Cheyney on January 5, 2014 when the Lady Wolves scored 18 points in the second of an 81-51 Edinboro triumph.

The Lady Eagles were more competitive in the second half but the Fighting Scots outscored them 40-33 in the final frame.

Edinboro shot 29-for-58 (50.0 percent) from the floor compared to Lock Haven shooting 21-for-60 (35.0 percent). The Fighting Scots also shot 6-for-11 (54.5 percent) on 3-pointers while the Lady Eagles finished 2-for-9 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc.

Freeland led all players with 21 points and registered her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 rebounds. The York, Pa. native scored 17 points in the first half on 8-for-11 shooting. She finished the game 10-for-14 from the field.

Lindsay scored 17 points on 6-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-4 on 3-pointers as she closes in on 1,000 career points. The graduate student guard/forward is now 11 points away from becoming the 29th player in Edinboro school history to reach that mark. Lindsay also added a game-high six assists.

Hippo was the only other player to score in double figures as she did so for the seventh straight game. The junior guard scored 13 points while shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 on 3-pointers.

Nicole Johnson and Maggie Moore each recorded a career-high for rebounds, finishing with 11 rebounds and seven rebounds, respectively. Edinboro dominated the glass with 45 rebounds while Lock Haven only had 28.

The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Loren Kaiser. The sophomore guard came off the bench to score 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting. She was the only Lock Haven player to score in double figures.

The eight-game winning streak is tied for the ninth-longest in school history. It is the tenth time a Stan Swank coached team has won at least eight straight games at Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots now make the short trip to Erie, Pa. to face Gannon. The Lady Knights won earlier tonight 66-58 versus Kutztown and have won two in a row. Edinboro defeated Gannon in all four meetings last season and have won nine of the last ten meetings between the two.
