Edinboro Moves on to Atlantic Subregional Championship Game in Shootout over Charleston

ERIE, Pa. (November 13, 2015) - Three lightning delays. Two overtimes. And zero goals. The Edinboro and Charleston(WV) women's soccer teams battled through 110 minutes in the NCAA Division Atlantic Subregional first round game without a goal. When it was all said and done, penalty kicks decided who moved on to face top-seeded Gannon in Sunday's championship game. Edinboro would prevail 3-1 to advance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history.

Officially, the contest goes down as a tie, with fourth-seeded Edinboro now 14-7-1 and Charleston, the fifth seed, ending its season at 11-4-6. In their fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Fighting Scots move on for the first time to face Gannon on Sunday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m.

The contest was played under brutal conditions at Gannon's McConnell Famil;y Stadium, with winds gusting to 40-45 mph., putting the wind chills into the high 20's and low 30's. Rain and sleet pelted the field throughout the four-and-a-half hours it took to complete the match. The two teams were forced to wait out two hours in delays due to the lightning.
"I've been doing this job for a long time, and I've never been involved in a game that has taken this long," head coach Gary Kagiavas commented. "It was brutal. But the result is all that matters. It's an exciting moment for our program, this team, and everyone involved with it."

The Golden Eagles had the first opportunity to shoot in the first round of overtime, with Marlee Coleman's shot deflected by Sierra Davis and hitting the post. Nicole Chabot fired a shot past Charleston goalkeeper Zoe Zyta into the right side of the net for Edinboro.

Both teams made good in the second round, with Alice Broadbent scoring for Charleston and Reilee DuPratt answering in the right side of the net for the Fighting Scots.

Davis came up with another stop in the third round, as the sophomore made a diving stop to her left on Courtney Underwood's shot. When Jansen Hartmann blasted a shot into upper left corner past a diving Zyta, Edinboro led 3-1.

Moments later, Davis came up with her third big stop as she deflected a shot by Hannah Myers to end the shootout and send the Fighting Scots onto the field in celebration.

"I have this thing in my mind," Davis pointed out afterwards. "I have in my mind which way they are going to go, and I just go for it. I'm so proud of all the effort the girls put in."

That Davis was even in the game came as a bit of a surprise. Sarah Baskey started the contest in goal, but Kagaivas removed her at 61:39. Davis, a sophomore transfer from Cleveland State, came in and played the rest of the way. She finished with four saves, while Baskey had two.

"Sarah has had a great season," Kagiavas pointed out, "but with the wind blowing this hard, she's quick off her line. Sierra came in and did fantastic.

Edinboro ended the match with a 25-15 advantage in shots. That edge was particularly evident in the first half. Playing with the wind, the Fighting Scots had an 18-3 advantage. While having several opportunities to score, they could not put the ball in the net against a Charleston team which allowed just 13 goals all season.

Charleston would hold a 9-4 edge in shots in the second half, but Edinboro was able to keep the Golden Eagles from any serious threats.

Playing with the wind again in the first overtime, Edinboro had three shots to Charleston's one. The Golden Eagles had the only two shots in the second overtime.

Zyta finished the day with 15 saves.
