EDINBORO, Pa. (November 18, 2015) – The Edinboro University women's basketball team led Slippery Rock from the first whistle to the final buzzer in tonight's PSAC contest, using a fast start and a strong fourth quarter to secure the victory. The Fighting Scots improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC with the win, while The Rock drop to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC.
Senior Aignee' Freeland got the scoring started for Edinboro as the Fighting Scots began the quarter on a 14-4 run and scored eight of the first ten baskets of the game. They would lead 20-10 after 10 minutes. Freeland began the second quarter with four more baskets in the first four minutes as Edinboro moved the lead to 32-16. Freeland dominated for a majority of the first two quarters, scoring 16 of her 18-points in the first half.
Aignee' Freeland scored 16 points in the first halfLeading 54-45 after three quarters, the Fighting Scots scored 29 points in the fourth quarter, led by Michelle Jahn. The freshmen from nearby General McClane High School scored all 14 of her total points in the fourth quarter in the final 8:07, hitting three 3-pointers and adding 5-of-6 free throws.
With Slippery Rock still trailing by nine at 56-47, the Edinboro offense exploded in the fourth quarter for 29 points, the big period started by a Jahn 3-pointer with 8:07 remaining. She hit back-to-back threes and added a third one for good measure a few minutes later. Edinboro scored 18-points in the final minutes to close out Slippery Rock for good.
Edinboro shot 44.8 percent (13-29) from the field in the second half and shot over 50 percent from distance, going 6-11 from three. The Fighting Scots held The Rock to just 36.1 percent (13-36) shooting in the second half and held a 27-16 rebound advantage.
Katie Fischer was the leading scorer in the game, totaling 26 points. The junior guard made 10-of-17 field goals, including 4-of-9 3-pointers. She added seven rebounds and seven assists. Freeland finished the game with 18 points and nine boards. Maggie Moore finished with her second double-double in three games, totaling 10 points and 11 rebounds. Although she did not register a basket, Whitney Allen grabbed eight boards, dished out four assists and blocked a pair of shots.
Carpenter was the leading scorer for The Rock with 22 points. Patterson added 16. Krista Pietropola led The Rock with six rebounds. Slippery Rock shot just 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field. The Fighting Scots held a wide 43-27 advantage on the glass, with 15 offensive rebounds.
The Fighting Scots don't get much time to celebrate the victory. Edinboro back at home this Saturday, November 21 hosting Kutztown in a PSAC Crossover at 1 p.m.
