RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 25, 2015) – The Edinboro University women's basketball team fell to 4-2 on Wednesday night with a 101-64 loss at Virginia Union. The Panthers remained undefeated at 5-0. The loss marks the worst for
Stan Swank's Fighting Scots since 103-66 defeat to West Liberty during the 2007-08 season, and it's the first time an opponent scored 100 points against Edinboro since Glenville State scored 101 points in 2012.
Edinboro never led in the game and the contest was tied just once at 2-2 on
Katie Fischer's jumper less than a minute into the game. Virginia Union would run off 13 straight points in the first quarter and jumped out to a 29-11 lead after ten minutes. The Panthers shot 64.3 percent from the floor in the first period (9 of 14), making 4 of 7 3-pointers, and were 7 of 11 at the line. Edinboro, meanwhile, came out cold, making just 5-of-19 shots (26.4 percent).
Things never got better after that for the Fighting Scots. The lead ballooned to 31 points in the second quarter at 48-17 before the Panthers settled for a 55-25 lead at the half. The deficit grew to as large as 40 points twice in the fourth quarter.
Virginia Union would end the night shooting 52.8 percent from the floor (38 of 72), including 10 of 27 on 3-pointers, and made good on 15 of 20 free throws (75.0 percent). Edinboro, meanwhile, shot 43.3 (26 of 60), making 5 of 11 3-pointers, and was 7 of 11 at the line. The Panthers had a narrow 38-36 rebounding advantage, but forced 23 turnovers while committing just 10.
Katie Fischer was one of the few bright spots for Edinboro, as the Mercyhurst transfer continued her strong early-season play with 24 points. She made 10 of 18 field goals, including 4 of 6 3-pointers.
Lauren Hippo was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Aignee' Freeland was held to nine points and a team-high five rebounds.
Lady Walker led three Panthers in double digits with 28 points on a near-perfect 13-for-15 shooting performance, adding nine rebounds. Kiana Johnson added 20 points and 10 assists, while Rhani Bell had 17 points.
Edinboro returns to action in the IUP-Lodestar Classic at Indiana, Pa. on Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29, facing two more CIAA teams in St. Augustine and Johnson C. Smith, respectively.
