Edinboro Outlasts Gannon in Two Overtimes, 105-102, Behind Mason's 35 Points

EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 16, 2015) – The Edinboro men's basketball team survived two overtimes and three starters fouling out to outlast Gannon, 105-102, in a PSAC West contest at McComb Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. Edinboro remains atop the PSAC West at 6-1 and has a 6-3 overall record. Gannon suffered its sixth straight loss while falling to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

Edinboro snapped a four-game losing streak to the Golden Knights and was the first for head coach Pat Cleary against the local rival. The two-overtime affair was the first in the series since the 1983-84 season. In addition, the 102 points scored by Gannon was the highest total allowed since East Stroudsburg scored 102 points vs. the Fighting Scots on December 18, 2013. Edinboro scored 144 points in a win over Penn State DuBois last season.

Tommy Scales finished with 16 points.
Edinboro used a 25-3 run to close out the first half with a 45-35 lead. The game would turn into a back-and-forth affair, however, as the second half wore on. All told, the game featured 16 ties and 123 lead changes.

The Fighting Scots still maintained a 69-61 lead with 9:28 to play, but eight straight Gannon points knotted the game at 69-69 with just over seven minutes to play. After that, neither team would lead by more than four points the rest of the way.
Gannon grabbed an 85-84 lead with 33 seconds left as Isaiah Eisendorf made one of two free throws. Edinboro came back down and had a chance to win, but Henri Wade-Chatman missed the first free throw, but then made the second with 13 seconds left. Kevin Kuteyi's 3-pointer just before the buzzer was no good and the teams headed into overtime tied at 85-85.
Edinboro would lead just twice in the first overtime period, as the Scots would lose Wade-Chatman to fouls just twenty seconds into the extra session. Sheldon Brogdon made a pair of free throws with 2:55 to play for a 90-89 lead, but Gannon's Jean Yves Toupane made a pair 14 seconds later to give the Knights a 91-90 advantage. Michael Beck would send the game into a second overtime with a free throw with 34 seconds left. Brogdon's long 3-pointer right before the buzzer was off the mark.
Gannon would open the second overtime period with jumper by Eisendorf for a 93-91 lead. The Knights would lead just one more time, that at 98-97 with 2:38 on Tony Boykins' 3-point play.

Jaymon Mason, who enjoyed an incredible night would knock down back-to-back 3-pointers within 14 seconds to give the Scots a 103-100 lead with 1:48 left. Toupane's two free throws with 24 seconds left narrowed the lead to a point.  Je'Land Head made one of two free throws, and Gannon's last attempt by Toupane was blocked by Daryan Robinson, with Mikael Anderson grabbing the rebound. He made on of two free throws with a second left to ice the win.

Edinboro would shoot 43.3 percent for the game (29-of-67), while Gannon shot 54.2 percent (39-of-72) after coming into the game shooting 39 percent from the floor. The big difference was at the charity stripe, as Edinboro made -39-of-47 free throws while the Knights were 18-for-23. Gannon continually beat the Scots inside, outscoring Edinboro 54-28 in the paint. Gannon held a 42-35 advantage on the glass, but Edinboro would turn the ball over just six times compared to 15 for the Knights. That led to a 22-8 margin points off turnovers.
