Injury-Plagued Fighting Scots Come Up Short Against Clarion in the First Round of the Atlantic Regional

WHEELING, WV (December 3, 2015) – On a day full of upsets, the fourth-seeded Edinboro University volleyball team fell victim to one of their own, succumbing to number-five seed Clarion, 3-1 (25-23, 25-11, 25-21 and 25-23), in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament Atlantic Regional. It was the second consecutive year that the Golden Eagles eliminated the Fighting Scots in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

While Edinboro's historic season comes to an end at 31-7 overall, Clarion improved to 22-16 and moves on to face top-seeded Wheeling Jesuit. Wheeling Jesuit was the only higher seeded team to win in the first round, defeating Winston-Salem 3-0.

The injury-plagued Fighting Scots lived up to their name, fighting all match long, beginning with the first set. Clarion jumped out to a 4-0 lead to begin the night, which quickly grew to 14-10. Out of a timeout, the Fighting Scots began to chip away at the Golden Eagles lead, scoring four of the next five points. A Challen Litwiler kill tied the set at 15-all and sparked an Edinboro rally to take a 24-21 lead, forcing Clarion to burn a timeout. Clarion would score the next two points out of the time out to draw to 24-23, but a Litwiler kill sealed the opening-set victory.

Clarion responded in a big way in the second set, scoring the last eight points of the set to win 25-11. The third set was much more competitive as the teams traded points back and forth for much of the action. Clarion was able to pull away at the end, winning 25-21.

Clarion jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the fourth set, which grew to 14-7 before three straight points by the Fighting Scots forced Clarion to call a timeout. A Breanna Gardner kill cut the Clarion lead to 14-11, but the Golden Eagles answered back with three straight points of their own. Down 21-16 and with their season on the line, Edinboro dug deep and scored four straight points to cut the deficit to just one at 21-20. The Fighting Scots eventually gained the lead 23-22 on kills by Victoria Severo and Sydney Trathen, but Clarion scored the next three points to clinch the match.

Litwiler led the Edinboro attack with 19 kills, increasing her season total to 510. That total is the fourth-highest season total in school history. Victoria Severo totaled 15 kills and posted a .444 hitting percentage. Sophomore Sydney Trathen paced the offense with 43 assists and picked up five kills and a pair of service aces. Trathen finished the season with 1,348 assists, the seventh-highest season total in school history.

Litwiler and senior Marah Maycock totaled a team-high 16 digs apiece. Maycock increased her season dig total to 658, the fourth-highest season total in Edinboro history. Maycock leaves the Fighting Scots as the all-time games played leader with 514. Junior Latoya Hutchinson totaled a team-high two blocks solo, while Severo led with four total blocks.
