Freeland Eclipses 1,000 Career Points as Edinboro Rolls by The Rock 79-56

EDINBORO, Pa. (February 11, 2015) - Aignee' Freeland became the 30th player in Edinboro history to score 1,000 career points on Wednesday night as her and Valerie Majewski combined to score 52 points in a 79-56 victory against Slippery Rock. Freeland tied her season-high with 29 points and Majewski set a season-high with 23 points. The Fighting Scots have won three straight games and are now 17-6 overall and 14-5 in the PSAC West. The Rock fall to 9-13 and 5-13 in the division.

Freeland opened the game on a torrid pace. The junior forward/center scored her 1,000th career point at the 15:16 mark to give Edinboro an 11-7 lead. It was Freeland's ninth marker up to that point.

Valerie Majewski had a season-high 23 points while becoming the
10th player in school history to reach 100 career 3-pointers made.
Edinboro closed the half on an 8-3 run beginning with 4:22 showing on the clock to establish its first double-digit lead of the game. Fittingly, Freeland capped off the run with a buzzer-beater jumper to give the Fighting Scots a 33-22 lead. She had 17 points at the break on 8-for-14 shooting and added two blocks.

The Scots shot 14-for-33 (42.4 percent) in the first half compared to 8-for-28 (28.6 percent) for The Rock.

Edinboro jumped out to a 22-point lead in the second half following a 13-3 run. Lauren Hippo kick started the run with a layup with 17:06 left to play and was fouled on the play. She converted the free throw opportunity and then Majewski made a 3-pointer 33 seconds later to push the Scots lead to 46-28 with 16:33 remaining. Laurel Lindsay would score the next five points before Majewski concluded the stretch with a jumper at the 13:36 mark to make it 53-31 in favor of Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots took their largest lead of 32 points with 13 unanswered points near the end of the final frame. Majewski made a 3-pointer to go ahead 67-45 with 7:30 showing on the clock and followed that with two made free throws on the next possession. Freeland then pitched in two layups before Lindsey Jahn added a pair of free throws. Majewski then made two more free throws to increase the Edinboro lead to 77-45 with 4:35 left to play.

Slippery Rock would close the game on an 11-2 run to make the final score 79-56.

Edinboro shot 29-for-64 (45.3 percent) from the floor and 6-for-19 (31.6 percent) on 3-pointers while Slippery Rock shot 21-for-56 (37.5 percent) from the field and 5-for-12 (41.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Fighting Scots held a significant advantage in turnovers and points off turnovers. They forced 16 turnovers by The Rock while committing only seven. Edinboro outscored Slippery Rock 23-2 in points off turnovers.

Freeland dominated on her way to surpassing 1,000 career points. The York, Pa. native shot 14-for-24 from the field, the former setting a season-high and the latter setting a career-high. She added seven rebounds and two blocks. She is now 29th in career scoring with 1,020 points and passed Micki Cerchiaro for 11th in career rebounding with 689 rebounds.

Majewski's season-best 23 points came via 7-for-13 shooting, 4-for-8 on 3-pointers, and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. The senior guard became the 10th player in school history to reach 100 career 3-pointers made reaching exactly that mark tonight.

Lindsay neared a double-double with nine points and eight assists. The graduate student guard/forward is now six assists from becoming the first Edinboro player and third in PSAC history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists in a career. She currently has 1,093 points, 510 rebounds, and 494 assists. Lindsay also added a game-high four steals.

Whitney Allen pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds.
Whitney Allen had a career-night off the bench. The sophomore guard pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds and also tied a career-high with four assists. Allen played a career-high 29 minutes, besting her previous career-best by 10 minutes. She scored two points both coming on free throw attempts.

Taylor Siggers was the only player for The Rock to score in double figures. The junior guard finished with 18 points on 7-for-16 shooting, 2-for-2 on 3-pointers, and 2-for-5 at the charity stripe.

Edinboro limited Slippery Rock's D'Asia Chambers to nine points and seven rebounds. The senior guard/forward was one of only three players in the PSAC averaging a double-double entering the game.

The Fighting Scots face a steep challenge in their next contest as No. 13 Indiana (Pa.) visits McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 14 for the Fighting Scots Fighting Cancer Day. The last time these two played the Crimson Hawks were victorious 86-60 on January 14, snapping a 10-game losing streak to Edinboro. IUP won 81-59 earlier tonight at Mercyhurst. The Crimson Hawks enter Saturday 20-2 overall and 16-2 in the PSAC West. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
