Edinboro Spreads the Wealth in 81-69 Victory at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. (February 18, 2015) – Six Fighting Scots scored in double-figures and the Edinboro men's basketball team used a big second half run to top host Clarion 81-69 in a PSAC Western Division contest on Wednesday night at Tippin Gymnasium in Clarion, Pa. The Fighting Scots won their second straight game and improved to 13-12 overall and 10-11 in PSAC West play, while the Golden Eagles fell to 9-15 and 6-14, respectively.

Will Marrow had 13 points for Edinboro.
Clarion's Darius Stevens knocked down a free throw to open scoring in the second half and knot the contest at 36-36 with 19:22 remaining. Edinboro answered with a 6-0 run capped by a Will Marrow layup on a Casey Baker assist to take a 42-36 lead at the 18:23 mark of the second half.  
 
The Golden Eagles responded with five unanswered points to cut the deficit to one point at 42-41 with just over 17 minutes to play, before the Fighting Scots used a 15-5 run, including a 10-0 surge at one point to gain a 57-46 advantage with 10:55 remaining in the game. The spurt was keyed by five points from Jaymon Mason and a dunk by Henri Wade-Chatman.
 
Edinboro extended the run to 19-8 over the next two minutes after a Sam Sealy-James layup to take a 12-point lead at 61-49 at the 8:52 mark of the second frame.
 
Clarion fought back with a 9-2 surge to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to five points at 63-58 with just over six minutes to play. However, Edinboro would answer with an 11-5 run highlighted by a 3-pointer by Jeremy Lynch and a Sealy-James dunk to build the Fighting Scots' advantage back to 11 points at 74-63 with 3:42 to play.
 
Edinboro did not let the lead dip below nine points from that point on. The Fighting Scots built their advantage to as many as 13 points at 81-68 with 27 seconds remaining in the contest before holding on for the 81-69 conference triumph.
 
Wade-Chatman paced six Fighting Scots in double-figures with 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting.
 
Baker tallied 14 markers, making 4-of-9 field goals and a perfect 6-of-6 shots from the free throw line. The senior forward also grabbed nine boards.
 
Marrow dropped in 13 points, connecting on 5-of-7 shots from the floor, including 2-of-3 tries from behind the arc. Marrow also dished out a game-high five assists for the Fighting Scots.
 
Tommy Scales notched his third double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 10 boards. The 6'8'' center made 5-of-7 field goals in the win.
 
Sealy-James had a career-high 10 points on the night, scoring in double-figures for the first time in his career. He posted a perfect shooting line, connecting on 4-of-4 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws.
 
Mason finished with 13 markers, making 7-of-9 free throws, while Lynch provided solid backcourt play off the bench, playing a career-high 20 minutes for Edinboro.
 
Kyheim Hall scored a game-high 20 points for Clarion, followed by Stevens and BJ Andrews with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

The Fighting Scots shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) for the game, while the Golden Eagles finished shooting 37.9 percent (22-of-58) Edinboro made just 3-of-11 shots from behind the arc, but shot 83.3 percent (20-of-24) from the charity stripe. Clarion was 3-of-12 from long range and connected on 66.7 percent (22-of-33) of free throws in the game.
 
The Fighting Scots won the battle down low, outrebounding the Golden Eagles 38-28 and outscoring Clarion in the paint 48-26.
 
Edinboro overcame 21 turnovers in the victory, the Fighting Scots' second-highest total of the season.
 
In the first half, Edinboro jumped out to an 11-9 lead after a Marrow jumper. The Golden Eagles then scored 11 unanswered points to gain a 20-9 advantage with ten minutes remaining in the opening period. The Fighting Scots committed four turnovers during the Clarion surge.
 
The Golden Eagles would hold an eight-point lead at 24-16 at the 7:44 mark of the first half, before Edinboro used a 9-2 run ignited by a Marrow 3-pointer to cut Clarion's advantage to one point at 26-25 with 5:25 to play in the opening stanza.
 
The Golden Eagles scored the next four points to build their lead to 30-25. The Fighting Scots then closed the half on an 11-5 run keyed by five points from Scales to take a 36-35 advantage heading into the locker room.
 
Wednesday's victory combined with California (Pa.)'s 63-62 loss to Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown's 81-72 loss to Mercyhurst propels Edinboro into fifth place in the PSAC Western Division standings.
 
The Fighting Scots, who sit at 10-11 in conference play, have one game remaining next Wednesday at home against UPJ. Edinboro can clinch a PSAC Tournament berth with a victory over the Mountain Cats. UPJ (9-11) and California (9-11) each have two games to play.
 
Two of the six PSAC Tournament spots in the Western Division still remain, as Gannon, Mercyhurst, Indiana (Pa.) and Slippery Rock have all clinched a spot in the postseason.
 
Tipoff against the Mountain Cats is set for 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday, February 25 at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro will recognize its two seniors, Baker and Sealy-James prior to the contest.
