CLARION, Pa. (February 18, 2015) -
Laurel Lindsay had a night to remember on Wednesday. The graduate student guard/forward tied a career-high 23 points while recording a double-double with 10 assists as the Edinboro women's basketball team defeated Clarion 81-51. The Fighting Scots improve to 18-7 overall and 15-6 in the PSAC West while Clarion falls to 2-23 and 1-19 in the division.
Lindsay flirted with her second career triple-double as she also added eight rebounds. The South Park, Pa. native notched the double-double at the 5:48 mark when she connected with
Anastasia Riabchenko for her 10
th assist of the game. Lindsay then tied her career-high on a jumper with 4:07 showing on the clock. She scored 23 points against Gannon last year in the Atlantic Regional Semifinals. Lindsay shot 9-for-14 from the floor, 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, and 2-for-4 at the free throw line tonight.
Valerie Majewski finished with
15 points.The Fighting Scots went on a 22-3 run after conceding the first field goal of the game. The Scots run began at the 19:09 mark with a 3-pointer from
Lauren Hippo that was followed by a Lindsay 3-pointer. Hippo poured in another shot from beyond the arc at the 14:22 mark.
The Scots took a double-digit lead for good with 13:11 showing on the clock when
Valerie Majewski made a layup to go ahead 15-4.
Hippo capped off the impressive stretch with two made free throws with 9:28 remaining in the opening half. The Fighting Scots led 22-5 at this point. Clarion shot 1-for-13 from the field and committed five turnovers during Edinboro's run.
Edinboro extended its first half lead to as much as 26 points when Lindsay scored on a layup with five seconds left in the opening frame. The Fighting Scots led 41-15 at the break.
The Fighting Scots shot 15-for-30 (50.0 percent), 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) on 3-pointers, and went 6-for-10 at the free throw line. Clarion was limited to 7-for-31 (22.6 percent) and missed all nine 3-point attempts in the first half.
The 15 points given up by Edinboro in the first half was its fewest points allowed by Edinboro in any half this season. The last time the Scots gave up 15 or less points in a half was February 27, 2013 against Mercyhurst when they allowed 14 first half points to the Lakers.
The Fighting Scots led by as much as 35 points when Riabchenko made a jumper with 2:00 remaining. Edinboro led 79-44 at that point.
Clarion pieced together a 7-2 run to end the game and bring the final score to 81-51.
Edinboro finished the game shooting 31-for-64 (48.4 percent) and 8-for-16 (50.0 percent) on 3-pointers. Clarion shot 19-for-61 (31.1 percent) and 1-for-16 (6.3 percent) from beyond the arc. The latter was the worst 3-point shooting percentage by an opposing team with double-digit 3-point attempts against the Scots this season.
Edinboro made the most of Clarion's 15 turnovers scoring 22 points off turnovers.
Majewski scored 15 points for the Scots on 5-for-13 shooting, 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-4 at the charity stripe. She scored 11 points at the break. The senior guard added four rebounds and three steals.
Hippo finished with 13 points, 11 points in the first half, on 4-for-9 shooting, 3-for-6 on 3-pointers, and made both of her free throw attempts. The junior guard added five rebounds.
Aignee' Freeland rounded out the quartet of Fighting Scots to score in double-figures. The junior forward/center scored 10 points on 4-for-13 from the field and 2-for-4 at the free throw line. She also pulled down six rebounds, dished out four assists, and had two blocks.
Clarion had two players' record double-doubles. Delrika Jones-Carey led the Golden Eagles with 18 points and added 11 rebounds while Jen Straw had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Kari Steuer was the only other Clarion player to score 10-or-more points, finishing with 13 points.
Edinboro is off this weekend before closing out the season with Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, February 25. It will also be Senior Day for the Fighting Scots as they honor Lindsay, Majewski, Riabchenko,
Raven Brown, and
Hope Mancini. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
