EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 28, 2015) – The Edinboro women's basketball team began defense of its 2014 PSAC Championship on Saturday with a 68-53 win over Seton Hill in a first round playoff game. The fourth-seeded Fighting Scots improved to 20-7 on the season while fifth-seeded Seton Hill's season came to a close at 12-17.
The 20 wins mark the fifth straight season head coach
Stan Swank's team has won 20-or-more game. It is also the 11th 20-win campaign in Swank's 28-seasons, as he now has 513 wins as Edinboro's head coach.
Laurel Lindsay dished out eight assists.Edinboro now moves on to play at Indiana(Pa.) in a PSAC Quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 3. The Crimson Hawks earned the top seed in the PSAC West and come in with a 24-2 record. They are ranked seventh in the latest USA Today Division II Top 25. In addition, IUP is ranked second in the latest in NCAA Atlantic regional rankings while Edinboro is tenth.
The Fighting Scots never trailed in the contest and held a double-digit lead for good less than eight minutes into the game.
Valerie Majewski started off the contest with a jumper and followed with a 3-pointer to give Edinboro a quick 5-0 advantage.
Following a Seton Hill timeout the Griffins scored back-to-back baskets to close to 5-4 with 16:40 left in the first half. Edinboro responded with a 10-0 run to grab a 15-4 lead with 13 minutes, 47 seconds remaining.
Lauren Hippo accounted for eight of the points with a pair of three's and a jumper.
Seton Hill would close the gap to 15-7, and trailed when 18-9 when Edinboro bumped the lead over double digits for good. An 8-2 run by the Scots featured another pair of Hippo 3-pointers.
Edinboro would settle for a 38-24 lead at the half after leading by as many as 18 points in the first half. The Fighting Scots shot 51.9 percent from the field (14-of-27) over the first twenty minutes while limiting the Griffins to 27.6 percent (8-for-29). Edinboro also dominated the glass 24-11.
Edinboro's lead would jump to as much as twenty points in the second half at 48-28 when
Laurel Lindsay drained a 3-pointer with 14:33 remaining. Seton hill would never pull closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Valerie Majewski finished with 11 points.Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures, led by Hippo with 17 points. The junior swingman scored 14 of those points in the first half. She would make 6-of-13 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers. Hippo added five rebounds.
After playing 56 career games without a double-double sophomore forward
Nicole Johnson recorded her second straight game with double figures in points and rebounds. She finished with a career-high 16 points (6-for-7 FGs, 4-for-7 FTs) and pulled down 12 rebounds, one shy of the career-high she set on Wednesday against Pitt-Johnstown. She added three assists and a pair of blocked shots.
Aignee' Freeland added 15 points and eight rebounds. She moved into a tie for 26th place in career scoring and now has 714 career rebounds, just two shy of moving into ninth place. She also blocked two shots.
Nicole Johnson had her second straight double-double.Majewski wrapped up the quartet of double-digit scorers as the senior guard finished with 11 points, making 3-of-7 3-pointers. Lindsay, ranked first in the PSAC and third in Division II in assists per game, handed out eight assists to give her 195 for the season. That moves her into fifth place all-time in a season.
Chelsea Apkea was the lone Griffin to reach double figures, finishing with 14 points. Seton hill shot just 32.8 percent for the game (21-of-64) and made just 3-of 23 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Edinboro would end the game at 49.0 percent from the floor (24-of-49) and made 9-of-25 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots ended the game with a wide 45-27 advantage on the boards.
