Fighting Scots’ Rally Falls Short Against Gannon 66-61

EDINBORO, Pa. (February 4, 2015) – Trailing 60-51 with 6:23 to play in a PSAC Western Division matchup on Wednesday night, the Edinboro men's basketball team constructed a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 61-60 lead over visiting Gannon with 2:14 remaining in the contest. Unfortunately for the Fighting Scots, the Golden Knights scored the final six points of the game to earn a 66-61 victory at McComb Fieldhouse.
 
With the loss, Edinboro saw its four-game winning streak snap, falling to 11-10 overall and 8-9 in PSAC West play. Gannon, who owns sole possession of first place in the division and clinched a PSAC Tournament berth with the win, improved to 15-7 and 14-3, respectively.

A pair of free throws from Rich Austin gave the Golden Knights the nine-point lead at the 6:23 mark. Sheldon Brogdon nailed a 3-pointer to ignite a 10-0 surge, which was capped by a jumper from Henri Wade-Chatman to give the Fighting Scots their first lead in 18 minutes of play at 61-60. Jaymon Mason also knocked down a shot from behind the arc during the spurt.
 
After a pair of rare missed free throws by Gannon's Adam Blazek and a Mason missed jumper, Girbran Smith knocked down a jumper to give the Golden Knights the lead for good at 62-61 with 1:25 to play.
 
Both teams were held scoreless for over a minute, before Blazek hit two shots from the charity stripe to give Gannon a 64-61 advantage.
 
With a chance to tie the game on the next possession, Mason lost control of the ball just beyond half court, turning it over to the Golden Knights.
 
Blazek then connected on two free throws with nine seconds showing on the clock to seal the 66-61 victory for Gannon.
 
Wade-Chatman netted a game-high 26 points for the Fighting Scots on 8-of-24 shooting. The junior guard was 4-of-10 from long range and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, while posting three steals.
 
Mason tallied 14 markers making 4-of-9 shots to go along with five rebounds and three assists on the night. He shot 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
 
Sam Sealy-James grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for Edinboro, followed by Casey Baker with six boards. Will Marrow added eight points, three assists and three steals.
 
Blazek paced the Golden Knights with 20 points. A'Darius Porter notched a double-double with 10 markers and 10 rebounds for Gannon.

The Fighting Scots shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the field and were 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from behind the arc. Edinboro connected on 84.2 percent (16-of-19) of free throws, including a perfect 12-of-12 effort in the first half.
 
Gannon finished shooting 44.9 percent (22-of-49) on field goals, 50.0 percent (5-of-10) from long range and 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the charity stripe.
 
The Golden Knights owned a 38-31 rebounding edge, including nine offensive rebounds which led to a 12-4 advantage in second-chance points. Gannon also outscored the Fighting Scots in the paint 24-16.
 
Wade-Chatman hit a jumper on the Fighting Scots' first possession of the game to give Edinboro a 2-0 lead. The Golden Knights responded with a 16-2 run to gain a 16-4 advantage after a Porter jumper at the 14:18 mark of the first half.
 
Gannon would own that 12-point lead with 7:31 to play in the half, before the Fighting Scots answered with a 9-0 run ignited by seven straight points by Mason to cut the deficit to five points at 28-23 with 5:19 remaining in the opening period.
 
The Golden Knights built their advantage back to eight points at 35-27 with 1:40 showing on the first half clock. Edinboro then scored seven consecutive points to close the half, shrinking the Gannon lead to one point at 35-34. Quinn Lee Yaw closed the half with a dunk on an assist from Mason.
 
Wade-Chatman opened the second half with a jumper, giving the Fighting Scots their first lead since the 19:24 mark of the opening stanza at 36-35. Smith hit a jumper to end a 9-0 Edinboro run and retake a 37-36 lead.
 
Sealy-James answered with a layup to put the Fighting Scots on top 38-37 with 18:14 to play, before Gannon constructed a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to take their largest lead of the half of 11 points at 51-40 at the 12:24 mark of the second half.

Wednesday's loss marked another close defeat for Edinboro, as now seven of the Fighting Scots' nine PSAC losses have come by a combined 25 points.
 
Edinboro makes the short trip to Erie, Pa. to take on Mercyhurst on Saturday. Tip-off against the Lakers is set for 3 p.m. from the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
