ERIE, Pa. (April 15, 2015) – The Edinboro softball team swept host Mercyhurst on Wednesday in a PSAC West doubleheader to improve to 14-7-1 overall and 6-5-1 in league play. The Fighting Scots won the first game 4-2 and then claimed an 8-4 win in the nightcap.
The doubleheader marked the second day in a row that the Fighting Scots faced a local rival. Edinboro split with Gannon on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots will play their third straight doubleheader, part of a stretch of four straight twinbills in four days and five in six days, on Thursday when they host Clarion.
Samantha Weaver factored into both wins in the circle. The sophomore picked up her first save of the season the first game, retiring the final two batters of the game. She started the second game and pitched into the fifth inning to pick up her second win of the season.
GAME 1: Edinboro 4, Mercyhurst 2The Fighting Scots opened up a 4-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings and held off the Lakers. They scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a
Heather Tighe RBI single and Haley Streubing's fielder's choice. Sophomore
MaryLouise Lindner hit her first career home run in the second inning and Streubing drove in her second run of the game with a single in the top of the third for a 4-0 lead.
Mercyhurst would score single runs in the third and fourth innings to knock out starter
Kerri Stevens, who picked up the win to improve to 4-2.
Taylor Payne came in and threw the next 2 1/3 innings, giving up a pair of hits and striking out two. Weaver entered following a one-out Mercyhurst base hit and induced a pair of ground balls to end the game.
Edinboro finished the game with seven hits while Mercyhurst had eight.
GAME 2: Edinboro 8, Mercyhurst 4Edinboro doubled up the Lakers in game number two, as well, thanks to a pair of three-run innings. Tied at 1-1 after three innings, the Fighting Scots scored three runs in the top of the fourth. One run scored on a passed ball and the other two came home on a single by
Shelby Proctor. Proctor also drove in Edinboro's first run with a single.
Theresa Fleckenstein boosted Edinboro's lead to 5-1 with her fourth home run of the season in the fifth inning. Leading 5-2 going into the top of the seventh, the Fighting Scots pushed across three insurance runs to boost the lead to 8-2. All three runs scored on a bases loaded double by
Kylie Mason. Mercyhurst would score a pair of runs, one unearned, in the seventh off
Kalet Lenart, who earned her first save.
Proctor was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs, with Mason also driving in three runs on a 2-for-5 showing at the plate.
Laura Crooks added two hits. Weaver went 4 1/3 innings to pick up the win, allowing a pair of runs. Lenart tossed 2 2/3 innings, striking out five Lakers.
