Edinboro Falls Just Short of Upset Bid vs. Cal, Falling 37-30 in PSAC West Opener

EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2015) – Quarterback Jake Sisson threw for four touchdowns, three to Darren Massey, but Edinboro came up just short in its upset bid of California(Pa.) in the PSAC West opener for both teams at Sox Harrison Stadium. The loss dropped the Fighting Scots to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC West. The Vulcans are now 3-1 and 1-0, respectively. It marked Edinboro's 11th straight loss to Cal.

California(Pa.) opened both halves with a pair of touchdowns, in both instances looking to run away from the Fighting Scots. But a young Edinboro squad refused to fold, and found itself driving for a potential tying score late in the game.
 
Edinboro found itself trailing 30-9 midway through the third quarter after Cal scored on its first two possessions of the second half.
 
But the Fighting Scots answered immediately following the second square. Freshman Mitch Thomas returned the ensuing kickoff 35 yards to the Edinboro 48. Sisson and Alex Caratelli hooked up for 25 yards, and on the next play, the sophomore signalcaller found Massey for a 27-yard touchdown. Massey's second touchdown of the game was a diving reception while losing his shoe.
 
The Edinboro defense forced one of three Cal turnovers on the next series, with Gabe Tillman recovering a fumble at the Edinboro 41. It took the Boro offense six plays to move the remaining 59 yards. A pair of completions to Caratelli covered 40 yards to the 11. On 2nd-and-goal, Sisson found Massey at the five, and the junior wide receiver broke three tackles to score his third touchdown of the game on an 11-yard completion. It marked the third three-touchdown game of his career and left the score at 30-23 with 1:52 left in the third quarter.
 
Cal answered with an 11-play, 80-yard drive, with John Franklin III capping the march with a five-yard TD run with 12:27 left in the game.
 
Edinboro struck right back. On the third play from scrimmage, Sisson found Caratelli streaking down the right sideline, with the duo combining on a 57-yard scoring play. It marked the longest play of the year for the Fighting Scots and brought them to 37-30 with 11:09 to play.
 
Cal drove into Edinboro territory before freshman linebacker Trey Hall recorded his first career interception at the Edinboro 19.
 
Aided by several Cal penalties, the Fighting Scots moved down to the Cal 13. Sisson tried to hook up with Massey, but Aaron terry stepped in front of the pass at the three to end Edinboro's scoring threat. It marked the second straight week that Terry intercepted a pass to clinch a win for Cal.
 
Edinboro would get the ball back with 32 seconds to play and out of timeouts at their won nine. They would pick up one first down before time expired.
 
Following an Edinboro punt, Cal scored on its first possession. Franklin scored the first of his three touchdowns on a one-yard run to cap a 30-yard drive following a short punt into the wind. The extra point was wide to the right.
 
The Vulcans moved ahead 13-0 at the 7:42 mark of the first half following an Edinboro turnover. The eight-play, 45-yard drive again ended with a one-yard scoring run by Franklin.

Edinboro would score its first points of the first quarter on Cal's next possession, courtesy of the defense. Senior defensive end Domenic Principale sacked James Harris in the end zone for a safety with just over two minutes left in the first quarter.
 
Cal boosted its lead to 16-2 on a 34-yard field goal by William Brazill with 3:08 left in the second quarter. The score came following a Sisson interception.
 
The sophomore quarterback came back to lead a nine-play, 81-yard drive late in the half to cut the deficit to 16-9 at halftime. He picked up 31 yards on a scramble to convert a 3rd-and-5 play, then went five-for-five the rest of the drive. It ended with Massey's fingertip catch in the back of the end zone as he tip toed the end line for a two-yard touchdown with 30 bseconds left.
 
Cal came out on a mission in the second half, scoring quickly twice. The first came on a four-yard pass from Harris to Garry Brown to culminate an eight-play, 73-yard march. Harris then threw his second touchdown pass, a 29-yard strike to Luke Smorey to cap a 10-play, 83-yard drive. That gave the Vulcans a 30-9 lead with 6:39 remaining in the third quarter, but only signaled the beginning of Edinboro's comeback.
 
In his fifth career start, Sisson completed 22 of 32 passes for a career-high 281 yards with 4 TDs and 2 INTs.  He added 53 yards rushing on seven carries. Ja'maal Eveillard also totaled 53 yards on 12 carries as the Scots ran for a season-high 131 yards.
 
Massey and Caratelli enjoyed outstanding afternoon. Massey caught 10 passes for 93 with 3 TDS, marking the sixth time in his career with 10-or-more catches. The junior also moved into fourth place in career receptions with 143. He is also tied for third in career touchdown receptions with 19. Caratelli added a career-highs of 6 catches for 147 yards.   
The two teams fell just shy of 1,000 yards in total offense, as Cal finished with 546 yards and Edinboro had 412 total yards, a season-best. It marked the second straight week that a young Boro defense allowed over 500 yards.

The Vulcans did much of their damage on the ground, finishing with 308 yards. Franklin posted his second straight 100-yard effort with a career-high 196 yards on 31 carries. Jimmy Wheeler added 72 yards on nine rushes. Harris completed 22 of 30 passes for 238 yards with 2 TDs and an interception. Brown hauled in 10 passes for 107 yards.
 
The Edinboro defense was led by linebacker Gabe Tillman. The junior college transfer finished with 16 tackles and a fumble recovery, while freshman Thad Cornick added 11 stops.
 
Edinboro will look to claim win number one of the season next Saturday, October 3 as the Fighting Scots look to spoil Homecoming at Indiana(Pa.).  Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
