Edinboro Outscores Seton Hill, 99-88, Behind Trio of Mason, Scales, and Wade-Chatman

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Jan. 24, 2016),  – Cold and snow dominated the outside of Salvitti Gymnasium, but inside Edinboro and Seton Hill were red hot. While the Edinboro men's basketball team had to wait a day to play at Seton Hill due to Winter Storm Jonas, it was well worth the wait as the Fighting Scots won their second straight game with a 99-88 win on Sunday. The Fighting Scots improved to 11-6 overall and 10-4 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill is now 7-11 and 5-9, respectively.

Tommy Scales scored career-high 23 points.
Edinboro shot a season-high 64.3 percent from the floor, making 36-of-56 shots. That included a 69.6 percent figure (16-of-23) in the second half.  They added a 22-for-20 chart from the free throw line. Seton Hill wasn't far behind at 58.2 percent (32-of-55), including 63.0 percent (17-of-27) in the first half. The Griffins made 9-of-19 3-pointers and were 15-for-22 from the charity stripe.

The Fighting Scots were able to dominate inside. They held a 30-19 advantage on the glass and outscored Seton Hill in the paint, 48-30.

The game featured three of the top four scorers in the PSAC and turned into a high-scoring affair early on. The trio of Jaymon Mason, Tommy Scales and Henri Wade-Chatman combined for 79 points for Edinboro.

Mason, who came in tied with Seton Hill's Kameron Taylor for second place in scoring in the PSAC, enjoyed his third game of 35-or-more points this season. The redshirt sophomore guard finished with 36 points, three shy of his career high, with 21 in the second half. He made 13-of-23 shots, including 3-of-6 3-pointers, and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the line. He also led Edinboro with seven rebounds.

Scales provided the inside presence for the Fighting Scots, as the 6'8" senior made 10-of-13 field goals and 3-of-4 for throws for a career-high 23 points. He added six rebounds. Wade-Chatman contributed 20 points to push his career total to 1,215 points. The redshirt senior guard moved into 16th place in career scoring. He made 6-of-11 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws awhile handing out a team-high five assists.

While Taylor came in tied with Mason for second in the conference in scoring, it was Noah Davis who gave the Fighting Scots fits. The junior forward came off the bench to score a career-high 33 points, including 21 in the first half. He made 12-of-15 field goals, including 5-of-6 3-pointers, and was 4-for-6 at the line.

Taylor played just five minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls. He would finish with 14 points in 25 minutes. Trevor Blondin had 22 points for the Griffins.

Edinboro built a ten-point lead in the first half at 30-20 with just under nine minutes to play, but the Griffins responded with eight straight points. The Fighting Scots would go into the half with a 51-49 lead as the Griffins made 7-of-11 3-point attempts.

Seton Hill would tie the game on three occasions in the second half, the last at 63-63 on a Davis 3-pointer with 14:04 remaining. Edinboro answered with seven straight points over the next minute-and-a-half. Mason knocked down a 3-pointer and Wade-Chatman followed with a jumper and layup for a 70-63 lead.

Henri Wade-Chatman contributed 20 points and five assists.
A Taylor 3-point play cut the margin to 70-66, but Wade-Chatman's jumper and a layup by Mason built the lead back to 74-66.

Edinboro eventually built the lead up to 14 points at 90-76 when Scales scored with five minutes to play. Seton Hill would pull to within six points at 91-85 with 2:50 to play, but Mason scored on a jumper and hit a pair of free throws to quell any Seton Hill comeback hopes.

Edinboro faces local rivals Gannon and Mercyhurst this week as they begin the stretch run in the race for PSAC postseason action. The Gannon game, set for Wednesday, February 27 at the Hammermill Center, signals the start of second half action against PSAC West teams.
