Lauren Hippo became the 31
st player in Edinboro history to score 1,000 career points on Wednesday night, but the Fighting Scots came up short against local rival Gannon for the second time this season, dropping a 60-48 decision. The loss snapped a season-best five game winning streak for the Fighting Scots. Edinboro is now 14-7 overall and 9-6 in the PSAC West, while the Lady Knights improved to 13-6 overall and 11-4 in the West.
With the win, Gannon has swept the season series with Edinboro for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Edinboro jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter.
Michelle Jahn opened the scoring for Edinboro with a 3-pointer and Hippo followed up with back-to-back 3-pointers of her own to bring her within just five points of the 1,000-point club. Edinboro took a 15-13 lead into the second quarter when
Aignee' Freeland sank a buzzer beating layup with three seconds remaining.
Michelle Jahn led Edinboro with 16 pointsJennie Thies scored the first basket of the second period to bring the Lady Knights within one point and McKenna Shives hit a 3-pointer to take a two-point lead, but the Fighting Scots held Gannon scoreless for the next three minutes to regain a four-point lead at 21-17 with 5:49 remaining in the half. Back-to-back baskets by Morgan Neighbors and Lashawna Gatwood tied the game at 21-21 with 2:56 left until halftime. After a Freeland layup, Shives hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining to take a one-point lead into the locker room.
Gannon opened the second half with a 7-2 run, sparked by a Neighbors 3-pointer, to take a 31-25 lead at 5:42 remaining in the third quarter. Trailing by 11 points with 2:39 left in the third period, the Fighting Scots hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to just two points at 40-38 heading into the final quarter.
Katie Fischer sparked the run with a three-ball and Jahn followed with back-to-back 3-pointers of her own.
Trailing 44-40 with 6:03 remaining, Hippo hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to just one point and push her career points total to an even 1,000.
That was as close as Edinboro would come to the lead the remainder of the game as the Lady Knights lead grew to as much as 12 points. The final nine Gannon points were scored off of free throws. The Fighting Scots missed four free throws in the final period and were a season-low 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from the charity stripe for the game.
Edinboro shot just 3-of-14 from the field in the closing quarter and were 18-of-58 (31.0 percent) for the game, the third-lowest percentage all season. Jahn led the Fighting Scots with 16 points and a team-high 5-of-12 3-pointers. Hippo and Fischer both added 11 points each.
Katie Fischer dished out five assists Gannon dominated on the glass, holding a 45-32 advantage, the largest margin of the season against the Fighting Scots. The large rebound discrepancy led to a 16-6 advantage in second chance points for Gannon. Thies led the Lady Knights with a career-high 21 rebounds. In addition, she was the game's leading scorer with 17 points. Neighbors totaled 15 points, while Shieves added 10.
Edinboro will return to action this Saturday, January 30 when they host another local PSAC rival. The Fighting Scots will take on Mercyhurst at 1 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
