CLARION, Pa. (January 9, 2016) – Led by
Aignee' Freeland's team-high fifth double-double of the season, the Fighting Scots scored a road victory over PSAC West foe Clarion on Saturday afternoon. Clarion was one game ahead of Edinboro in the PSAC West standings heading into the matchup. With the win, Edinboro improves to 11-6 overall and pushes their conference record back over .500 at 6-5. The Golden Eagles drop to 6-11 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC with the loss.
Edinboro has won 10 of the last 11 matchups and six in a row against the Golden Eagles.
Lauren Hippo hit the dagger with 1:13 reamainingThe Fighting Scots got off to a fast start in the contest, scoring seven unanswered points to begin the game. A
Lauren Hippo 3-pointer got the run started just 30 seconds into the opening quarter. Hippo's second 3-pointer of the quarter with 6:02 remaining put the Fighting Scots up 12-4 and forced the Golden Eagles to burn a timeout. Clarion came out of the timeout and put together a quick 7-3 run to cut the lead to 15-11 with just over four minutes left to play in the opening period. Edinboro was able to weather the attack and held on to a 22-16 lead entering the second period of play.
With Edinboro leading 31-25 in the second period with 2:30 remaining in the half, the Golden Eagles strung together six unanswered points to tie the game with 53 seconds remaining. The Fighting Scots were 0-4 from the field during that stretch. Edinboro answered back quickly, however, scoring five unanswered points in the final minute capped off by a
Michelle Jahn 3-pointer to take a 36-31 lead into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles began the second half on an 18-8 run to taste their first lead of the contest with 4:26 remaining in the third quarter. Clarion's Tyra Polite scored the final seven points of the run, including a 3-pointer that gave the Golden Eagles a 49-46 lead. Edinboro responded swiftly, scoring 12 unanswered point to regain the lead with 1:08 remaining in the third quarter, taking a 60-52 lead into the final stanza.
Clarion opened the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to four points with 6:19 left to play.
Katie Fischer scored the next six points for the Fighting Scots as Edinboro built the lead back up to six at 68-62 with 2:18 remaining in the game. After two Delkrika Jones-Carey free throws cut the lead back to four, Hippo hit the dagger, a 3-pointer off an assist from Fischer, to give the Fighting Scots a seven-point lead with 1:13 left to play.
Since snapping a three-game losing skid in which they shot 29.7 percent from the field, the Fighting Scots have shot over 40 percent from the floor and beyond the arc the past two games. Edinboro finished 27-of-66 from the floor this afternoon, including going 8-of-19 from deep.
Edinboro turned the ball over a season-low eight times in the victory and held a 42-40 advantage on the glass, winning the rebounding battle for a third straight outing.
Freeland led the Fighting Scots, finishing with a season-high 28 points on 12-of-25 shooting and grabbed an even 10 rebounds. Freeland moved into 12
th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,347 career points. Fischer and Hippo joined Freeland as the only other Fighting Scots in double figures, totaling 19 and 15 points, respectively. In addition, Fischer, the PSAC assist leader, dished out 8 assists. Fischer has racked up 22 assists the past two games.
Katie Ficher led Edinboro with 8 assists Hippo finished 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, the third straight game where she has made at least three 3-pointers. Hippo has shot 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from deep over the past two games and has now scored in double figures each of the past four games after doing so just once in the previous six.
The Golden Eagles also featured three players in double figures, led by Polite's 20 points. Tania Holmes and Jordan Bekelja added 18 and 12, respectively.
Edinboro will recieve a week-long bye week before returning to action at McComb Fieldhouse, hosting Pitt-Johnstown in a 1 p.m. affair.
