ERIE, Pa. (October 21, 2016) – For the first time in over a calendar month, the Edinboro University volleyball team suffered a loss to snap a school record 17-match win streak. Gannon defeated Edinboro in five sets by scores of 22-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18 and 18-16. With the loss, the Fighting Scots are now 17-5 overall and received just their first conference loss of the season to put their PSAC ledger at 9-1. The Lady Knights improved to 19-3 and 8-2, respectively.
Prior to Friday night's defeat, the Fighting Scots were 4-0 in five set matches this season. Edinboro's last loss this season came on September 3 to the then #25 Colorado School of Mines.
The Fighting Scots opened the contest with victories in the first two sets, including a dominant 25-14 win in the second set. Gannon took the next two sets to force a fifth and final set which proved to be a hotly contested affair. The Fighting Scots took an 8-4 lead in the fifth set, but Gannon scored the next three points to make it 8-7. Edinboro grew the lead back to 12-9, but the Lady Knights once again fought back, taking a 14-13 lead. The Fighting Scots put Gannon on the brink with a 16-15 lead, but the Lady Knights scored three consecutive points to take the deciding set.
The senior duo of
Latoya Hutchinson and
Victoria Severo led the Edinboro attack with 15 and 13 kills, respectively.
Challen Litwiler added 11 kills and a game-high three service aces while totaling 16 digs.
Sydney Trathen dished out a team-high 39 assists to go along with her six kills and one service ace. Freshman
Jordan Van Oss added a pair of service aces and paced the Fighting Scots with a team-high 19 digs on the defensive end. Severo also got in on the action on the defensive side, totaling three block solos and one block assist. Freshman
Molly Owens added four block assists and a block solo.
Trathen and
Megan Screptock each added 12 digs apiece.
Gannon's offense was led by Kelsey Ansec with a game-high 18 kills while Beka Smith and Hannah Kren added 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Carolyn Knollman directed the Lady Knights offense with 43 assists. Kren also led the Lady Knights defensively with 19 digs.
The Fighting Scots square off with another Erie rival tomorrow afternoon, heading to Mercyhurst for a match scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
