EDINBORO, Pa. – After a slow start, the Edinboro offense rolled to one of the highest-scoring games in years to wrap up the regular season with a 66-8 win over Cheyney at Sox Harrison Stadium. The victory capped a Senior Day in which 14 players were recognized prior to the game. The Fighting Scots are now 9-2, tying the school record for wins in a season set on nine occasions, the last in 2009. Cheyney concluded its season at 1-10.
The Fighting Scots now await word on a potential NCAA Division II playoff bid. The NCAA will announce the field for the 2016 NCAA Division II Playoffs ion Sunday at 5 p.m. Edinboro was seventh in the latest Super Region One rankings.
The ninth win also sets the Division II record for largest turnaround from one season to the next. Edinboro has posted an improvement of nine games after finishing 0-11 a year ago. The 2014 Humboldt State team made an improvement of 8.5 games, as did Minnesota-Duluth in 2008. FCS-member Montana State holds the top improvement mark among all divisions at +9.5 in 1984.
Senior Nick Helmick
Edinboro dominated statistically as well as on the scoreboard, The Fighting Scots finished with 492 total yards, including 376 yards through the air, while holding Cheyney to 97 total yards. That included just nine yards rushing.
Jake Sisson enjoyed another outstanding game, completing 24-of-39 passes for 372 yards with 4 TDs and an interception. It marked the seventh game this year with four-or-more touchdown passes. He has broken most of the season records previously set by former standout Trevor harris, including most completions (294), attempts (539), yards passing (3,710), touchdowns passing (41), and total offense yards (3,824).
Jordan Williams, one of the seniors recognized before the game, finishing as the top receiver with 7 catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Ta'nauz Gregory added 5 catches for 66 yards with a score, and added a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was the freshman's third kick return for a touchdown.
James Clark caught 3 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown. The sophomore became the first receiver to go over 1,000 yards receiving since Ryan Valasek in 2006, and now ranks fourth with 1,010 yards.
Freshman
Brandon Rios made his first start at tailback and finished with 31 yards on five carries. Redshirt freshman
Kyle Galyk was the game's leading rusher with 54 yards on four carries, scoring his first two career touchdowns, and
Rob Bell added his first two career six-pointers while totaling 33 yards on eight rushes.
While the offense was piling up the points,
Victor Hudson was enjoying another standout day on defense. The senior defensive end led all tacklers with 11, and was constantly in the Cheyney backfield, finishing with 6.5 tackles for losses totaling 19 yards, including a half sack. He now has 24 tackles for losses and 11.5 sacks.The 24 TFL breaks the school record previously held by Hall of Famer Dave Smith (20).
Fellow seniors
Austin Mietz (9 tackles, 1.5 TFL),
Mike Shansky (7 tackles), and
Josh Kibbie (7 tackles, 2 TFL) also turned in strong games.
Edinboro took the opening kickoff and drove 49 yards in seven plays, reaching the Cheyney 12 before settling for a 29-yard field goal by
Austin Reese. The score would remain 3-0 after one quarter, but Edinboro blitzed the Wolves for 28 second-quarter points.
Sisson threw three of his touchdowns in the second quarter. Edinboro took a 10-0 lead after
Zuril Hendrick recorded his fifth interception of the season. Bell capped a five-play, 62-yard drive with a one-yard run at 13;27.
Rob Bell
After a three-and-out for Cheyney, Edinboro struck quickly on its next possession. In fact, the Fighting Scots needed just one play, as Sisson found Clark streaking down the field for a 64-yard touchdown, his tenth of the season, with 11:34 left in the half.
The Fighting Scots would tack on two more scores in less than a two-minute span to go ahead 31-0 at the half.
Jon Girvin recovered a Cheyney fumble at the Cheyney 38. Two plays later, the Scots were in the end zone as Gregory caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Sisson with 6:12 left in the half.
Another Cheyney fumble, this one recovered by
Victor Hudson, led to the next Boro score. Hudson recovered a fumbled snap at the Cheyney 8. On second-and-goal, Williams caught a nine-yard TD pass from Sisson with 4:16 remaining. It was his ninth touchdown reception.
The second-half scoring opened with a spectacular 70-yard punt return for a touchdown by Gregory after Cheyney opened the half with a three-and-out. Gregory had previously returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.
Edinboro would score on its next four possessions. After another Cheyney three-and-out, the Fighting Scots drove 61 yards on seven plays, with
Alex Caratelli getting into the end zone on a nine-yard pass from Sisson to make it 45-0 with 8:32 left in the third quarter. It was Caratelli's tenth TD reception.
Penalties killed the Wolves on Edinboro's next possession. The Wolves were called for four penalties leading to three Edinboro first downs. Edinboro would cap the 47-yard march on Galyk's one-yard run, the first career touchdown for the redshirt freshman. That made it 52-0 with 2:05 remaining in the third period.

Edinboro went 62 yards on eight plays on their next possession, with senior tight end
Nick Helmick catching passes of seven and 16 yards. Bell bolted the final 19 yards for his second touchdown of the day and a 59-0 lead with 10:46 left.
Cheyney scored its lone points of the day on the ensuing kickoff, as Yvesner Ferdinand took it back 94 yards for a touchdown. Kyle Berlin caught the two-point pass from Justis Jacobs.
Edinboro would tack on one final score with 9:40 to play, needing just two plays to do so after recovering an onside kick near midfield. Galyk went 40 yards on first down, then covered the final eight yards for his second touchdown.
