Mason Records 1,000th Career Point, But Edinboro Drops PSAC Opener at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (November 19, 2016) – Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason became the 28th Fighting Scot in history to reach the 1,000 career point milestone Saturday at Millersville. But despite his second straight double-double performance with a team-high 16 points with ten rebounds, the Edinboro University men's basketball team trailed the Marauders for much of the game, and ended up dropping a 79-71 decision in their PSAC season opener for their first defeat of the year. The Fighting Scots fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC, while Millersville improved to 1-1 and 1-0, respectively.

Mason reached the 1,000-point milestone in just 56 games. Only Tyrone Mason, Jaymon's father, and Kenny Tate reached the mark faster for Edinboro, with both reaching 1,000 points in 51 games. The 6'3" guard also passed former teammate Henri Wade-Chatman for tenth all-time with 288 career made free throws after going 8-for-11 from the line Saturday.

The Fighting Scots outrebounded the Marauders, 54-34, and shot 38.1 percent from the field (24-for-63), compared to 35.5 percent for Millersville (22-for-62). However, it was the story from behind the arc and the charity stripe that told the outcome. Millersville connected on 80.0 percent of their free throws (20-for-25) and 44.1 percent of their 3-pointers (15-for-34), while Edinboro shot just 60.7 percent from the line (17-for-28) and 28.6 percent from 3-point range (6-for-21). The Fighting Scots had averaged 75.4 percent and 49.0 percent, respectively, through their first two games.

Mason shot 4-for-11 from the field and went 0-for-3 from 3-point range. Junior center Andre Frederick finished tied with Mason for the team lead with ten rebounds, while scoring seven points. Senior forward Chibunna Ukandu was second on the team with 15 points, while junior forward Mike Beck was Edinboro's third double-digit scorer with 13 markers.

Despite only leading on two occasions, both two-point leads in the first five minutes, the Fighting Scots never trailed the Marauders by more than 11 points, and pulled to within three points when Malachy Onwudiegwu drilled a 3-pointer at 72-69 with 1:43 remaining. A foul by Frederick sent Millersville's Conrad Chambers to the line, where he connected on both foul shots to bump the Marauders' lead up to five with 1:18 to play. Edinboro's only score the rest of the way was an Onwudiegwu layup off a steal that made the score 76-71 Millersville with 24 seconds to play. The Marauders connected on 3-of-4 free throw attempts to close out the scoring.

The game was tied twice, once in each half. The first came on a free throw by sophomore center Jack Frank that tied the game at six with 15:55 left in the first half. Freshman forward Justin Sylver followed up with a jumper to give Edinboro the lead at 8-6 with 15:23 to go in the half, but Millersville responded with a 12-0 run that put them up, 18-8, with 11:51 left in the opening session. The Fighting Scots battled back to keep close with Millersville, with a 3-pointer by senior forward Mikael Anderson with four seconds left in the half cutting the Marauders lead to one for a 35-34 halftime score.

Beck knotted the game up at 51 on a layup with 9:20 to play, but a 3-pointer by Chambers with 9:00 remaining put Millersville back up for good. The Marauders extended their lead to double digits twice down the stretch, using an 8-0 run, aided by threes from Cornell Yarde II and Chambers, to put them up, 62-52, with 6:21 left to play. Mason responded with a pair of free throws to trim their lead to eight, but another Chambers 3-pointer gave Millersville its largest lead of the game at 65-54 with 5:38 remaining.

Chambers scored a game-high 24 points for Millersville, connecting on 5-of-10 3-pointers and 9-of-10 free throws. Marcus Adkinson had 16 points, while Yarde II posted a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds.

Edinboro completes the third and final game of their three-game road trip on Sunday at Shippensburg in a PSAC crossover contest at 3:00 p.m.
