Edinboro Falls to St. Bonaventure, 50-25, in Low Scoring Exhibition

OLEAN, N.Y. – Shooting struggles from the floor proved to be the difference as the Edinboro University women's basketball team dropped a low-scoring, 50-25, affair to St. Bonaventure in the two teams' annual exhibition game. Saturday's contest marked the seventh straight year the two teams have met prior to tipping off the regular season, with St. Bonaventure prevailing in all seven meetings.

The Fighting Scots opened the scoring in Saturday's exhibition on a layup by Michaela Barnes to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Those would be the lone Edinboro points of the opening quarter as St. Bonaventure scored the next six points to take a 6-2 lead into the second period. Roles were reversed in the second quarter as it was Edinboro who regained the lead.

The Fighting Scots scored nine of the first 11 points in the quarter, thanks in part by back-to-back jumpers by Katie Fischer and a 3-pointer by the senior to give Edinboro an 11-8 lead with just over four minutes left to play in the first half. Fischer added a layup in the final minutes as Edinboro took a 13-11 lead into halftime.

Fischer led all scorers at the half with nine points. She also four rebounds at the break. Barnes was the only other Fighting Scot to appear on the scoresheet at half, adding four points. Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half as Edinboro was 6-of-29 from the field, including 1-of-8 from deep while the Bonnies were just 4-of-24 and 0-for-5 from beyond-the-arc.

Following a free throw from Whitney Allen, Fischer connected on her second 3-pointer of the afternoon to give Edinboro a 17-14 lead early on in the second half. Nicole Johnson would extend the lead to five points at 19-14, but the shooting struggles caught up to Edinboro. St. Bonaventure ended the third quarter scoring 16 unanswered points as the Fighting Scots shot 2-of-12 from the floor in the third period and 5-of-26 in the second half.

The Bonnies continued to roll in the final stanza, opening the fourth on a 10-2 run to build a comfortable 42-21 lead with just over three minutes left to play before eventually securing a 50-25 victory.

Fischer finished as the leading scorer for the Fighting Scots and the second leading scorer in the game. The guard finished with 12 points on 5-of-21 shooting and also totaled six rebounds and dished out three assists. Barnes finished with eight points for Edinboro while Allen and JaVannah Jackson each grabbed a team-high four rebounds. Allen also picked up a game-high four steals on defense.

The Fighting Scots finished the contest shooting 20 percent (11-of-55) from the field and 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from beyond the arc. They won the turnover battle by a slim 15-18 margin, but were beaten on the glass by a 52-30 margin.
