Mason, Anderson, Brogdon Combine for 71 Points as Edinboro Holds Off California(Pa.) 76-71

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team rode the trio of Jaymon Mason, Mikael Anderson, and Sheldon Brogdon to a 76-71 win over California(Pa.) at McComb Fieldhouse on Friday night. The trio combined for 71 points, as the Fighting Scots ended the 2016 portion of their season with a 4-6 record and 2-4 in the PSAC West. The Vulcans are now 3-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
 
Edinboro never trailed in the contest, and for a good portion of the game held a comfortable lead, but the Vulcans made things interesting late in the game. With Mason and Brogdon combining for 29 of Edinboro's first 31 points, the Fighting Scots held a double figure lead for most of the opening twenty minutes. The first half would end with Edinboro leading 39-28 as Brogdon had 16 points and Mason 14.
 
The Fighting Scots would boost the lead to 63-49 with just over eight minutes to play on Anderson's layup, but they would make just one basket over the next five minutes. The Vulcans used a 15-2 run to pull to within 65-64 with 3:08 remaining.

Cal would knot the score at 69-69 with 1:29 to go on Luka Andjusic's 3-pointer, but Mason came down and answered with his fourth 3-pointer of the game to give Edinboro a 72-69 lead. Daniel Sapp's layup with 47 seconds to go made it 72-71, but Anderson and Mason made a pair of free throws apiece to close out the win.
 
The Vulcans had a chance to pull to within one after Anderson's free throws made it 74-71, but Jay Tucker missed a free throw, and the Vulcans were called for a lane violation on the second attempt.
 
Mason continued his ascent up the Edinboro career scoring charts as he scored 33 points, making 10-of-21 field goals, including 4-of-7 3-pointers, and going 9-for-10 at the line. He added five rebounds and five assists without committing a turnover.
 
The junior guard now has four 30-point games this season and eight for his career. He moved into 21st place in career scoring with 1,162 points. He had 19 points in the second half.
 
Anderson added 13 points in the final twenty minutes to finish with 20 points, his fifth straight game in double figures. The senior swingman made 8-of-18 field goals with a 3-pointer, and was 3-for-3 at the line. He added seven rebounds and three steals.
 
After scoring 30 points in Edinboro's last game against Cheyney, Brogdon came out on fire and ended the night with 18 points (7-of-13 FGs, 3-8 3's, 1-of-1 FTs).
 
No other Fighting Scot scored more than two points as they were without a pair of key reserves. However, Jack Frank tied for the team lead with seven rebounds, and Maceo Baston saw his most extensive action of the season and finished with six boards in 25 minutes.

Edinboro shot 42.2 percent from the floor (27-of-64), making 8-of-20 3-pointers, and made 14-of-18 free throws (77.8 pct.). Cal ended the night making 26-of-60 field goals (43.3 pct.), but went 6-for-25 on 3-pointers, and made 13-of-18 free throws (72.2 pct.).
 
Cal held a 44-33 lead on the glass, leading to a 19-7 advantage in second chance points, but the Fighting Scots committed just four turnovers compared to 14 for Cal.
 
The Vulcans had three players in double figures, with Sapp finishing with a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Tucker posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards, while Rashawn Browne had 13 points.
 
Edinboro will look to extend its winning streak to three games when they debut in 2017 at Seton Hill on Tuesday, January 3. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
