Edinboro Extends Winning Streak to Ten with 71-54 Upset of Second-Ranked California(Pa.)

Jontay Walton Leads the Way with Career-High 23 Points off the Bench

EDINBORO, Pa. – Jontay Walton came off the bench to score 23 points and lead Edinboro to a 71-54 upset of second-ranked California(Pa.) on Friday night as PSAC West action opened up with a battle between the conference's two hottest teams.  The Fighting Scots stretched their winning streak to ten games and won their 14th straight game at McComb Fieldhouse while improving to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the PSAC West. The Vulcans tasted defeat for the first time while falling to 11-1 and 5-1, respectively.

Walton paced four Fighting Scots in double figures as the redshirt sophomore guard notched a career high with her 23 points. She added five rebounds, four on the offensive end, while making 9-of-16 field goals, including her lone 3-point attempt, and 4-of-5 free throws.

Katie Fischer added 17 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Despite foul problems, Ciara Rosten contributed 12 points (5-of-8 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), nine rebounds, and three blocked shots, while Nicole Johnson had 10 points (4-of-6 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs) and seven boards.

The real story for the Fighting Scots came on the defensive end, as they limited a Cal team which came into the game averaging 84.5 ppg., good for sixth in Division II, to a season-low 54 points. The Vulcans managed just 21 points in the second half. They had not scored fewer than 73 points in any game, and their closest game all season had been 15 points.

Edinboro jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led 20-11 after one quarter. Cal's pressure defense helped the Vulcans pull to within 36-33 at the half after Edinboro had led by as many as 12 points over the opening twenty minutes. Cal closed the half on a 16-7 run while forcing Edinboro into 12 turnovers that produced 15 points.

Cal would take their lone lead of the game early in the third quarter when Miki Glenn scored on a layup for a 37-36 lead with 8:22 left in the period. The Fighting Scots proceeded to run off the next 15 points. Rosten started the run with a layup and a pair of free throws. Fischer's jumper in the paint made it 42-37, with Walton following with a pair of free throws. She then dished to Fischer for a 3-pointer and a 47-37 lead, before hitting a short jumper. Fischer capped the outburst with a jumper for a 51-37 lead with 2:38 to play.

The Vulcans finally scored after going scoreless for almost six minutes on Lana Doran's 3-pointer with 2:28 left in the quarter. Edinboro would the period with a 54-45 lead.

Cal scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter to close the gap to seven at 54-47, but a Rosten jumper in the paint and Fischer's layup boosted the lead back to double figures at 58-47. Cal would never pull closer than seven points the rest of the way, as Edinboro scored the final eight points of the game while holding the Vulcans scoreless for the final 3 minutes, 58 seconds.

Edinboro shot 50.0 percent for the game (29-of-58), and was 10-of-12 at the line, while Cal shot 40.4 percent from the floor (23-of-57) and was 6-of-12 at the charity stripe. The Fighting Scots dominated the glass, 43-22, and held a 44-34 advantage in points in the paint. That helped to more than offset 24 turnovers against a Cal team that came in leading the country in turnover margin and turnovers per game.

Edinboro's bench once again proved a major factor, outscoring the Vulcans 30-3. In addition to Walton, Cheniya Sharpe contributed five points and six rebounds and Maggie Moore provided 17 effective minutes.

Glenn, the 2016 PSAC West Player of the Year and a WBCA All-American, finished with 15 points to lead Cal, adding seven rebounds and five assists. Shatara Parsons had 14 points and Seirra Barrett 10.

Edinboro will look to extend its winning streak on Tuesday, January 3 when they open the 2017 portion of their season at Seton Hill. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
