EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 13, 2016) - The Edinboro University mens' basketball team not only clinched a berth in the PSAC Tournament, but also a home game, with a 97-94 win in overtime over Clarion on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. The win boosted the Fighting Scots to 14-9 overall and 13-7 in the PSAC West, as they moved into second place ahead of Mercyhurst (12-7) following the Lakers loss to Pitt-Johnstown. Clarion fell to 12-14 overall and 9-11 in the PSAC West while remaining in the hunt for a playoff berth.
Henri Wade-Chatman led the Scots with 27 points.Henri Wade-Chatman scored seven points in the overtime session as Edinboro overcame an early three-point deficit to hang on for the win. Clarion jumped out to an 88-85 lead less than a minute into the extra session. Wade-Chatman hit a long jumper just inside the three-point line with the shot clock winding down to make it 88-87.
Rob Agurs made one-of-two free throws as Clarion went up, 89-87, but Wade-Chatman came back down and drained a 3-pointer to give Edinboro the lead for good in overtime at 90-89 with 3:28 to play.
The lead would grow to five points as Wade-Chatman's three began a string of seven straight points.
Tommy Scales and
Mikael Anderson each made a pair of free throws for a 94-89 lead with 2:25 to play.
Edinboro allowed the Golden Eagles to stay in the game, however, making just three of their next six free throws. Agurs' three-point play with 20 seconds remaining pulled the Golden Eagles to within a point at 95-94. Scales would make one-of-two-free throws two seconds later for a 96-94 advantage.
Following a timeout, Clarion would turn the ball over, but Wade-Chatman made just one-of-two free throws to keep the game within one score at 97-94. Cameron Grumley's near full-court heave came up short to give Edinboro its third win in four overtime games.
All told, the tight game featured 13 ties and 12 lead changes. Edinboro moved out to a 75-64 lead with 7:38 to play. But the Golden Eagles would run off 12 straight points over the next four minutes to move ahead, 76-75. The game would be tied three more times in regulation after that, along with a three lead changes.
When Mike Beck drained a three from the right baseline with 1:08 remaining, Edinboro led 82-80. Agurs made two free throws, with Wade-Chatman's jumper giving the Scots an 84-82 lead with 16 ticks showing. Clarion came down and missed a pair of shots, but on their third attempt Agurs' tip-in tied the score with 0.6 seconds left and sent it into overtime.
Edinboro ended the game shooting 55.0 percent (33-of-60), while Clarion shot 47.7 percent (31-of-65). Besides those figures, the game was as even statistically as it was on the scoreboard. Edinboro made 25-of-34 free throws and Clarion 27-of-34, while the Golden Eagles held a 37-34 edge on the boards. Edinboro committed 14 turnovers and Clarion 13. One big difference came in the paint, with the Scots scoring 44 points compared to 30 for Clarion.
Wade-Chatman led five players in double figures with 21 points as he went over 1,300 for his career. The senior guard made 10-of-15 field goals, including both 3-point attempts, and was 5-for-8 at the line. He added seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Scales registered his fifth double-double and second game with 20-or-more points as the 6'8" senior finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots.
Jaymon MasonMason, coming off his fourth 30-point game of the year, finished with 17 points. He made 6-of-9 free throws, in the process breaking Billy Wade's school record for free throws made in a season. Mason has now made 144 free throws in 169 attempts. The attempts are tied for ninth. The redshirt sophomore added four steals.
Beck and Anderson also reached double figures with 10 points apiece, with Anderson coming off the bench to pull down five rebounds, as well.
Agurs led all scorers with 30 points, making 10-of-18 field goals and 10-of-11 free throws. He added 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals. De'Ondre Terrell contributed 16 points, with BJ Andrews adding 14 and Andre' Anthony 10.
Edinboro will take a break from the PSAC wars, but they figure to have their hands full on Tuesday, February 16 with Wheeling Jesuit visiting McComb Fieldhouse. The Cardinals come in riding a 19-game winning streak and are 24-1 and ranked second in the latest NABC Division II poll. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
