CALIFORNIA, Pa. (March 1, 2016) – The fourth-seeded Edinboro University women's basketball team led for three quarters in tonight's PSAC Quarterfinals contest, but turnovers caught up to the Fighting Scots as they fell just short of knocking off top-seeded California (Pa.) in Hamer Hall. Edinboro finishes its season 20-10, while the Vulcans improve to 22-5 and host Shippensburg in the semifinals.
Edinboro came out strong in the opening half, leading 38-33 after two periods. Four of the Fighting Scots first six baskets came off 3-pointers as Edinboro shot 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from beyond the arc and 66.7 (14-of-21) percent from the floor in the first half.
Despite 14 first half turnovers, the Fighting Scots built the lead to as many as eight points at 38-30 with 2:25 remaining in the opening half off a
Katie Fischer 3-pointer.
Whitney Allen had a team-high 10 reboundsThe Vulcans opened the second half scoring the first four points to cut the Edinboro lead to one point at 38-37 under two minutes into the third period. Edinboro answered with a 7-2 run, including back-to-back layups by
Aignee' Freeland and a
Michelle Jahn 3-pointer, to take a 45-40 advantage.
The Fighting Scots would take their first double-digit lead of the contest at 51-41 thanks to a 6-0 run with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter. The Vulcans would respond with a 10-4 run to end the third period, capped off by a Paige Wright 3-pointer with four seconds remaining, to cut the deficit to 57-53 heading into the final period of play.
Cal began the final quarter scoring the first eight points of the quarter and using a 12-2 run to take a 65-59 lead with 6:55 remaining in the game. A
Lauren Hippo jumper cut the lead to two points at 69-67 with 3:37 remaining, but the Fighting Scots were held scoreless the remained of the game as the Vulcans ended the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run. Edinboro was 0-for-5 from the field in the final stretch and turned the ball over twice.
A scrappy Edinboro squad had the defending PSAC and National Champions on the ropes for a majority of tonight's contest, but shot just 4-of-14 in the final stanza as the lead slipped away.
After committing a season-high 25 turnovers in the regular season finale at Cal, the Fighting Scots turned the ball over 20 times in tonight's loss. Edinboro finished the contest shooting 52.0 percent (26-of-50) from the field and making 7-of-19 3-pointers, but connecting on just 1-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc in the second half. The Vulcans shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor and were 17-of-27 from the charity stripe.
Cal held a slim 33-30 advantage on the glass, including a 16-7 margin in offensive rebounds.
Jahn led the Fighting Scots with 24 points before fouling out in with 2:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. Jahn was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, increasing her season total to 71, tied with
Lauren Hippo for the fifth most in single-season history.
Katie Fischer was the only other Fighting Scot to score in double-figures, totaling 17 points and seven assists. Fischer finished the season with 194 assists, the sixth most in single-season history.
Katie Fischer finished with 17 points Freeland finished with eight points, concluding her four-year career with 1,555 points, ranking sixth on the all-time scorers list. Hippo added six points as she also finished her career as a member of the 1,000-point club, totaling 1,083 points, good for 26
th all-time.
Whitney Allen was the squads leading rebounder, finishing with ten boards.
Maggie Moore came off the bench to contribute eight points and six rebounds.
Precious Martin led a quartet of Vulcans in double-figures with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting. The PSAC's leading scorer, Miki Glenn finished with 18 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Wright added 14 points, while Shatara Parsons finished with 11.
