CLERMONT, Fla. (March 11, 2016) – For a fifth straight day, the Fighting Scots split a pair of games to remain at .500. Edinboro rolled through Northern State in five innings, winning 11-0, before dropping a battle with the Saginaw Valley Cardinals, 5-4.
The Fighting Scots conclude their 12-game spring trip tomorrow, March 12, taking on Ashland and Southern New Hampshire.
Game One – Edinboro 11, Northern State 0 (5 Innings)The Fighting Scots used a combination of strong pitching from starter
Kerri Stevens along with a high-powered offense to take care of Northern State in just five innings. Stevens pitched all five innings, giving up just three hits and fanning four batters while the Edinboro bats rolled to the tune of 12 hits from seven different batters.
Edinboro struck early and often. After
Kylie Mason and
Danna Heh walked to start off the contest,
Olivia Jankowski singled up the middle to load the bases.
Brooke Callaghan took advantage of the opportunity, bringing in both runners with a two-RBI single up the middle.
Haley Struebing followed with an RBI single of her own to give Edinboro a 3-0 lead.
Kerri Stevens pitched all five innings, giving up just three hits and striking out fourTheresa Fleckenstein doubled to left center, bringing in two more runners to give the Fighting Scots a 5-0 lead heading to the second inning.
Stevens set down the side in order to start the second inning, striking out the leadoff batter.
After Heh reached on an error, Jankowski doubled to left center to bring home the base runner. Callaghan drove Jankowski in for her third RBI of the game to give Edinboro a 7-0 lead. Struebing singled, followed by a
Jessica Hyland walk to set up a MaryLouise Lidner two-RBI single to the gap in right center.
The Fighting Scots added one more run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a
Katie Holmes standup RBI double to bring the score to 11-0
.
Stevens got in some trouble in top of the fifth as Northern State loaded the bases, but she navigated her way out of the jam to hold the Wolves scoreless and preserve the victory. Stevens recorded her first win of the season, improving her record to 1-1.
Game Two – Saginaw Valley 5, Edinboro 4After a game in which the Fighting Scots did their damage early, it took until the latter innings for Edinboro to find its groove.
Saginaw Valley took a 2-0 lead after one, but Edinboro made it 2-1 after a
Theresa Fleckenstein RBI single drove in
Brooke Callaghan following her triple to right field.
The Cardinals brought home a couple more runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Edinboro cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fourth when
Jessica Hyland drove in Callaghan from second base.
After a quiet fifth inning, the Fighting Scots evened the score at 4-4 when
Cheyenne Bothun scored on a passed ball and
Alexandra Carroll singled to left field to bring home a runnef from third.
Saginaw Valley scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead as Edinboro was set down in order in the top of the seventh.
Samantha Weaver entered in relief for
Abby Sotter, who received the start, when the Fighting Scots were trailing 3-1. Weaver pitched three and a third innings, giving up four hits and just one run.
