Fighting Scots Bounce Back in Nightcap to Split a Pair of Games on Thursday

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 10, 2016) – The Fighting Scots bounced back from an extra innings, 2-1, loss against Minnesota State Mankato to the tune of a 5-3 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in the night cap to split a pair of games on Thursday. Edinboro now sits at 4-4 with four more games remaining on the spring trip.

The Fighting Scots are back in action tomorrow, March 11, taking on Northern and Saginaw Valley

Game One – Minnesota State Mankato 2, Edinboro 1 (Eight Innings)
The Fighting Scots suffered a heartbreaking extra innings loss in a pitching duel that saw both starters go the distance. Carley Nasca got the start for Edinboro, suffering her first loss of the season. Nasca pitched all seven and two-thirds innings, striking out five batters and walking just one.

Minnesota State Mankato got on the board first, scoring on a throwing error in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Fighting Scots didn't wait long to retaliate, however, as Haley Struebing delivered an RBI double to drive the tying run in in the fourth inning.

After the Fighting Scots were held scoreless in the top of the eighth, Minnesota State Mankato dropped a walk-off RBI single into right field for the win.

The loss puts Nasca at 2-1 for the season, while Minnesota State Mankato's Libby Bemis improved to 5-2.

Game Two – Edinboro 5, Southwest Minnesota State 3
After a pair of scoreless innings to begin the contest, Edinboro broke through in the third inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead. MaryLouise Lindner ledoff the inning with a bunt single, followed by a Courtney Allen bunt single that advanced Lindner to third.

After Lindner took home on a wild pitch, Taylor Payne delivered an RBI double to center field to bring home Allen. Brooke Callaghan followed up with an RBI of her own, this time a single down the right field line.

Edinboro added a couple more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead thanks to a two-RBI single from Callaghan. Olivia Jankowski reached on a single and Taylor Payne walked to set up Callaghan.

Southwest Minnesota State threatened in the latter innings, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth inning to make it 5-2 heading to the seventh. The Mustangs cut it to just 5-3 before Abby Sotter picked up her first save of the season, striking out the final batter to preserve the win.

Edinboro got another solid outing from its starting pitcher, this time Kalet Lenart, as she picked up her second win of the season. Lenart gave up just one earned run and struck out three, while walking none, to improve to 2-0.
