ERIE, Pa. (March 26, 2016) – Thanks in part to a pair of outstanding pitching performances, the Edinboro University softball team recorded its first pair of PSAC wins by sweeping local rival Gannon for the first time since 2013. With the sweep, the Fighting Scots improved to 7-9 overall and an even 2-2 in the PSAC. The Golden Knights dropped to 8-10 and 0-2 in the PSAC.
Edinboro returns to the field on Friday, April 1, traveling to California (Pa.) for a PSAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Game One: Edinboro 4, Gannon 1Freshman
Carley Nasca received the start in the circle for the Fighting Scots in game one of the doubleheader and pitched a nearly flawless complete game. Nasca gave up just one hit and walked just one while striking out a pair of batters.
After three scoreless innings, Edinboro opened the scoring in the fourth inning. The Fighting Scots scored four runs in the top of the of fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Leadoff batter
Danna Heh singled up the middle followed by a
Brooke Callaghan single to put runners on first and second for
Haley Struebing. Struebing reached first on a sacrifice bunt thanks to a throwing error by the third baseman that also allowed Heh to score from second.
Heather Tighe brought home Callaghan on the ensuing at-bat with a bunt single to give Edinboro a 2-0 lead. Another error by the Golden Knights allowed a pair of runners to score on a
Kylie Mason sacrifice bunt to give the Fighting Scots a 4-0 lead.
Gannon's lone run and hit came in the fifth inning as Nathaly Pacheco singled and eventually came around to score, unearned.
Nasca's complete game, her third of the season, improved her record to 3-3.
Olivia Gumbita got the start for the Golden Knights, pitching 7.0 innings while giving up six hits, a walk and striking out six batters. With the loss, Gumbita is now 6-4 on the year
Game Two: Edinboro 2, Gannon 0The Fighting Scots received another outstanding outing from their pitcher, this time courtesy of
Kerri Stevens. Stevens pitched her second complete game of the season, giving up just three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Stevens evened her 2016 record at 2-2 with the win.

Haley Struebing led-off the top of the second with a single down the left field line. After a
Heather Tighe sacrifice bunt advanced Struebing to second,
Kylie Mason singled to right field to bring home the runner. Mason advanced to second on a
Theresa Fleckenstein groundout followed by a
Jessica Hyland walk.
MaryLouise Lindner drove in Mason from second with a single through the left side to give Edinboro a 2-0 lead, which proved to be the winning score.
Stevens gave up just one hit in the final three innings to preserve the Edinboro lead.
Kellyn Perich received the loss for Gannon, tossing 7.0 innings, giving up seven hits and two walks. Perich fell to 1-4 on the season.
