GOLDEN, Colo. (September 2, 2016) – The Edinboro University volleyball team opened up its 2016 campaign this afternoon, participating in the two-day Golden Oredigger Classic, hosted by the Colorado School of Mines. The Fighting Scots concluded day one of the event with a 0-2 record after falling to #13 Nebraska Kearney in the early game before succumbing Indianapolis in the nighttime affair.
Edinboro will have a chance to turn things around tomorrow on the final day of the Golden Oredigger Classic when they take on St. Cloud State at noon before concluding the trip against host Colorado School of Mines at 4 p.m.
#13 NEBRASKA KEARNEY DEF. EDINBORO 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-18)
The Fighting Scots fell in their first match of the 2016 season in three sets to Nebraska Kearney to open up the Golden Oredigger Classic. Nebraska Kearney played in the NCAA Central Regional last year after an impressive 29-7 season.
Edinboro jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first set before Nebraska Kearney scored 20 of the next 26 points, including the final eight points, to take the opening set.
Senior
Latoya Hutchinson led the Edinboro attack with 7 kills and a team-high .385 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Megan Screptock added six kills, while also contributing five digs on the defensive side. Redshirt junior
Jill Glover totaled four kills and four digs in her return to the court after missing a majority of the 2015 season with an injury.
Freshman
Jordan Van Oss totaled a team-high 12 assists in her Fighting Scot debut, while junior
Sydney Trathen added eight assists and led the squad with six digs.
INDIANAPOLIS DEF. EDINBORO 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-20)
Edinboro took the opening set to begin their second match of the day, but dropped the three subsequent games as Indianapolis downed the Fighting Scots to conclude day one of the Golden Oredigger Classic.
Megan Screptock led the Fighting Scots with 10 kills, while also adding five digs, a pair of assists, and a block solo. A trio of Fighting Scots finished with six kills apiece, including
Latoya Hutchinson,
Sydney Trathen and
Challen Litwiler. Trathen also led the way with a team-high 12 assists and three service aces.
Jordan Van Oss finished with 11 assists and a team-high nine digs to go along with a pair of kills and a block assist. In what was a defensive affair, Edinboro finished with a .024 hitting percentage, while Indianapolis finished at just .172 percent. As a squad, the Fighting Scots finished with 43 digs and three blocks, while Indianapolis totaled 50 digs and seven blocks.
