EDINBORO, Pa. (September 21, 2016) – The 19th-ranked Edinboro women's soccer team is off to its best start in school history. That came courtesy of a 1-0 win over California(Pa.) on Wednesday night at Sox Harrison Stadium. The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 6-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the PSAC. The Vulcans dropped to 1-4-2 both overall and in league play. The 2010 team had the previous best start in school history at 5-1-1.
The victory is the 199th in head coach
Gary Kagiavas' career, all at Edinboro. He is the only coach the school has had, with the program starting in 1996. Kagiavas will go for win number 200 on Saturday, September 24 when the Fighting Scots play at Lock Haven.
With the Vulcans playing eight players back, scoring was at a premium. The Fighting Scots had three strong scoring opportunities in the first half, but despite leading in shots 7-1, the first half ended in a scoreless tie.
Edinboro finally found the back of the net at 73:20 as freshman
Sidney Dobbins dribbled the ball into the middle of the field and fired a shot from twenty yards. The ball was misplayed by goalkeeper Meghan Jayes, with the ball dribbling behind her into the back of the net. The goal was the first of Dobbins' career.
Cal would not threaten the rest of the way, and Edinboro had several other solid scoring chances but was turned away by Jaye.
Edinboro held a 20-2 advantage in shots, with Jaye recording nine saves. Edinboro goalkeeper Shannon Baskey was not forced to record a save while picking up her third shutout of the season and the eighth of her career.
