EDINBORO, Pa. (September 3, 2016) – Both Edinboro's offense and defense were on-point Saturday versus Davis & Elkins, holding the Senators to two shots while notching a pair of goals in each half for a 4-0 non-conference win. The victory puts the Fighting Scots at 2-0-0 overall with a 1-0-0 PSAC mark. Davis & Elkins dropped its season debut to start at 0-1-0.
Edinboro faced a Senators squad that led NCAA Division II last year in scoring. The Fighting Scots reacted by netting a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes. Sophomore forward
Alex Root notched her first goal of the year on a breakaway in the eighth minute, assisted by freshman midfielder
Danielle Chatten. Junior midfielder
Coleen Brodman then found
Alex Brown in the 19th minute, where the junior forward connected from ten yards out for her second goal of the year to take a 2-0 lead.
The Edinboro defense preserved the two-goal lead heading into halftime, holding Davis & Elkins to just two shots in the opening session. The Fighting Scots would have eight first-half shots of their own, with four shots on goal. Edinboro finished with an 18-2 advantage in shots and a 9-1 lead in shots on goal.
The Fighting Scots continued to control the pace in the second half before notching two quick goals. After a penalty kick by Brodman in the 68th minute hit the right post, sophomore midfielder
Halle Hammer came up with the ball and fed a cross to freshman midfielder
Morgan Hamker, who netted her first career goal to make it a 3-0 Boro lead. Two minutes later, Brown made a move down the left side, firing a shot that deflected off the hands of goalkeeper Lauren Hill. But Brodman would be there to come up with the loose ball and score Edinboro's fourth goal of the contest.
Brown now has 20 career goals, which puts her ninth all-time at Edinboro in career goals. She is six goals shy of reaching former teammate
Jansen Hartmann for eighth all-time.
Head coach
Gary Kagiavas, who began the Edinboro women's soccer program in 1996, picked up his 195th career win, putting him five wins away from the 200 career-win milestone.
Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Baskey earned her first shutout win of the year, collecting two saves to improve to 2-0-0. She made a shutout-saving effort with six minutes to play when she came out of the box to break up a pass to Katrina Giantsopoulos that could have otherwise resulted in a breakaway scoring chance.
Edinboro takes its first road trip of the year this upcoming weekend with a pair of PSAC matches at Shippensburg on Friday and Millersville on Saturday.
