Mason Scores 30 as Edinboro Makes it Back-to-Back Road Wins With 70-59 Victory at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Fewer may just be better for Edinboro men's basketball coach Pat Cleary. Despite having just eight healthy players, the Fighting Scots ran off their second straight win on Saturday afternoon, and on the road no less. Edinboro closed out a string of three straight road games with a 70-59 win at Slippery Rock. Cleary's club is now 6-11 overall, but more importantly, improved to 4-9 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock is now 10-9 and 6-7, respectively.

Jaymon Mason once again provided the impetus with another 30-point effort. The redshirt junior guard posted his seventh 30-point game of the season and 11th of his career with 30 points, making 9-of-18 field goals and 12-of-13 free throws.  He entered the game as the leading scorer in the PSAC. He added a team-high nine rebounds and handed out four assists while committing just one turnover. He also continued his ironman act, playing all 40 minutes for the sixth straight game.

Sheldon Brogdon and Mikael Anderson joined Mason in double figures, with Brogdon draining three 3-pointers on his way to 13 points, and Anderson finishing with 10 points. Mike Beck contributed nine points and Jon Girvin had eight rebounds.

A much-maligned defense again stepped up, holding The Rock to 38.7 percent from the floor (24-of-62), including 4-of-17 on 3-pointers. SRU also made just 7-of-19 from the free throw line. One of the top rebounding teams in the country, Slippery Rock held a 45-36 advantage on the glass, but The Rock committed 11 turnovers, while Edinboro had just five. Edinboro shot 43.9 percent from the floor (25-of-57), and was 16-of-20 at the line (80.0 pct.).

Slippery Rock finished with three players in double figures, led by Vinny Lasley's 16 points. Christal Malalu added 13 points and 19 rebounds, with Merdic Green finishing with 11 points.

The first half featured 10 lead changes and six ties, with neither team leading by more than four points. That was before Edinboro ran off eight straight points to end the first half with a 32-26 lead. Anderson accounted for the first six points with a layup, a pair of free throws, and another layup. Mason closed out the half with a layup with six seconds to play.

Slippery Rock opened the second half with a pair of baskets to close the gap to two points. Edinboro answered shortly after with a run of eight straight points to build a 12-point lead at 50-38 with 15:26 remaining. Brogdon opened and closed the run with a pair of threes.

SRU would close the gap to four points on two occasions, the second at 57-53 with 7:51 remaining. The Edinboro defense would allow The Rock just two more baskets the rest of the way, with the second coming with just 25 seconds to play. SRU made just 2-of-8 shots with three turnovers over the final seven minutes.

Mason, meanwhile, dominated down the stretch, scoring nine points in a row before Maceo Baston's layup accounted for Edinboro's final basket with 33 seconds to play.

Edinboro plays for the first time in two weeks at McComb Fieldhouse on Wednesday, January 25, hosting Mercyhurst.
