Late Edinboro Rally Comes Up Just Short in 58-52 Defeat at Cal (Pa.)

CALIFORNIA Pa. (January 28, 2017) – A late Edinboro rally came up just short Saturday evening in a PSAC West contest at California (Pa.) as the Fighting Scots fell to the Vulcans by a 58-52 score. Despite being held to a season-low 52 points and being outrebounded, 56-31, the Fighting Scots never trailed by more than nine points the entire contest. Edinboro nearly erased a nine-point deficit with 3:25 remaining, pulling to as close as one point of Cal's lead at 53-52 with just under a minute remaining.

The Fighting Scots dropped to 6-13 and 4-11 in the PSAC West, while the Vulcans improved to 8-13 and 5-10, respectively. The defeat halted Edinboro's four-game win streak against Cal and a stretch where they had won five of the six previous meetings over the Vulcans. Head coach Pat Cleary's team celebrated a 76-71 victory over Cal earlier this season on December 30 in McComb Fieldhouse.

Buckets proved to be at a premium Saturday. Edinboro shot a season-low 29.1 percent (16-of-55) for the game, including 25.9 percent in the second half (7-for-27), while Cal season finished at 32.3 percent (20-of-62) with a 27.6 percent (8-of-29) second-half showing. The Fighting Scots made 6-of-22 3-pointers and 14-of-20 free throws, as the Vulcans shot 6-of-31 and 12-of-20, respectively. Cal led, 18-7, in second chance points and 22-12 in points in the paint.

Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason led all scorers with 18 points, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Saturday's game marked his eighth straight game playing all 40 minutes. The 6'3" guard, who entered the contest having scored at least 30 points in three straight games, moved into 10th place all-time on Edinboro's career scoring list with 1,380 points. Mason needs 18 points to pass his former teammate, Henri Wade-Chatman, for ninth all-time.

Maceo Baston had nine points with nine
rebounds in his second career start for Edinboro.

The Vulcans held a 33-27 lead at halftime, despite holding a 30-13 first-half lead on the glass. While the Fighting Scots trailed the entire second half, their defensive efforts kept Cal from trying to expand its lead into double digits. Edinboro cut the Vulcan's lead to one possession three times through a little over the first 13 minutes of the second half. The last instance was when Maceo Baston nailed a jumper to make the score 46-43 Cal with 6:42 to play. The Vulcans answered with a 7-1 run to bump their lead back up to nine at 53-44 with 3:25 to go. Edinboro went on to score the next eight points, with Mason connecting on four of his eight free throws in the run. His last two brought Edinboro to within one points at 53-52 with 50 ticks remaining.

With two fouls still to give, the Scots sent Robel Teckle to the line, where he connected on both his free throws to put Cal up, 55-52, with 45 seconds to play. A Mason jumper fell short of the mark on the Boro's following possession, in which Cordell Smith grabbed the rebound for Cal. He was then fouled and made his first free throw to give the Vulcans a 56-52 lead with 29 seconds to play. Smith would make two free throws down the stretch for the final points of the contest.

A set of injuries caused the Fighting Scots to suit up just seven players for the second straight game. Four Fighting Scots are currently resting injuries, including starting guard/forward Mikael Anderson, who has missed the last two games after suffering an injury at Slippery Rock last Saturday.

The Vulcans began the run by scoring eight straight points to give them their largest lead up to that point, 30-22, with 3:43 to go in the half.
