Mason Collects 34 Points in 97-84 Defeat at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (January 9, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's basketball team battled Bloomsburg to an even first half Monday night for a 38-38 halftime score. Yet despite a game-high 34-point, eight-assist performance by redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason, the Huskies shot a whopping 61.8 percent (21-for-34) in the second half, including 6-for-9 from 3-point range, for 59 points to hand Edinboro a 97-84 defeat in Nelson Field House. The Fighting Scots suffered its third straight loss to go to 4-9 and 2-7 in the PSAC West, while Bloomsburg jumped to 7-6 and 3-6 in the PSAC East. The contest marked Edinboro's final PSAC crossover game of the season.

The Fighting Scots shot 44.1 percent (15-for-34) from the field in the closing period for a 45.5 percent (30-for-66) game total. They made 11-of-30 from behind the arc. The Huskies finished at 50.7 percent (37-for-73) and 10-of-21 on 3-pointers. Bloomsburg's bench outscored Edinboro's, 42-10, and the Huskies led in rebounds, 40-31, on their way to a 21-11 lead in second-chance points. They also led, 18-9, in fast break points. Edinboro has not held a team to under 40 points in the second half this season.

Mason tallied his fifth 30-point game of the season and the ninth of his career, moving up two spots on the Edinboro career scoring list to 16th with 1,240 points. He passed Aaron Brown and Frank Smith. The 6'3" guard was 11-for-24 from the floor and made 4-of-11 3-pointers, passing Torry Mitchell and Jose Davis in career 3-pointers made with 136. He also shot 8-for-10 from the free throw line.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, which featured ten ties and 13 lead changes, that led to the 38-all halftime score. Mason provided the bulk of Edinboro's scoring with 20 first-half points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field and making three of the Fighting Scots' four 3-pointers. Both teams shot an identical 4-for-12 from 3-point range, with Edinboro shooting 46.9 percent from the floor (15-for-32) and the Huskies shooting 41.0 percent (16-for-39). Bloomsburg took a five-point lead, the largest lead of the half for either side, when Christian Mortellite drilled a 3-pointer for a 31-26 advantage with 3:49 to go before intermission. Edinboro responded with a 12-7 run to close the half, aided by threes from Mason and redshirt senior guard Sheldon Brogdon and layups from junior center Andre Frederick and junior guard/forward Maceo Baston.

Brogdon opened the second half with a three that gave Edinboro a 41-38 lead with 19:37 left to play. It would be their last lead of the game, however, as Bloomsburg countered with a 27-12 run. They connected on their first four 3-point attempts of the half, with the first two coming from Mortellite, for a 65-53 lead with 12:06 to go. The Fighting Scots interrupted the run with a 10-2 run of their own, featuring back-to-back 3-pointers by Mason and junior guard/forward Mike Beck and another triple from senior guard/forward Mikael Anderson, that cut the Huskies' lead down to four at 67-63 with 9:29 remaining.

Edinboro trimmed the lead to four on three other occasions, but that would be as close as they would get. The last instance was a Brogdon jumper that made the score 73-69 Bloomsburg with 7:35 left to play. The Huskies then used a 16-6 run to increase the gap to 14 points at 89-75 with 2:14 on the clock. Kyle-Michael Rose started the run with a jumper, then after a 3-pointer by Yahmir Green, Rose provided a layup for seven straight Huskies points. Bloomsburg extended their lead to as much as 16 points before the final buzzer sounded.

Mortellite led Bloomsburg with 27 points, making 5-of-11 3-pointers, while Rose scored 22 markers in 25 minutes off the bench, shooting 10-for-16 from the field. Carnell McGirt tallied a double-double off the bench with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Greenlee, who missed the first half of the year, scored 14 points in his fourth game back with the Huskies, making 2-of-3 triples.

Senior guard/forward Mikael Anderson and redshirt senior guard Sheldon Brogdon finished tied for second on the Fighting Scots with 13 points, while junior guard/forward Mike Beck was Edinboro's fourth double-digit scorer with 10 points. Junior guard/forward Maceo Baston grabbed a team-high nine rebounds with four points in 18 minutes off the bench.

The Fighting Scots now quickly turn their attention to a home PSAC West contest against Gannon on Wednesday, January 11. Tip-off is set for 7:30 in McComb Fieldhouse.
