Impressive Offensive Display Leads to 69-20 Win at Seton Hill

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Edinboro 69, Seton Hill 20
  • Records:  Edinboro (6-3, 4-2 PSAC West), Seton Hill (0-9, 0-6 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Greensburg, Pa. – Offutt Field
  • The Short Story:  Edinboro broke a 20-20 tie with 49 straight points to post a 69-20 win at Seton Hill. Edinboro has now won three straight games to improve to 6-3 overall and tied for second in the PSAC West with California(Pa.) and Slippery Rock at 4-2. A steady rain did not bother the Fighting Scots' offense, as they would end with a school-record 826 total yards, two shy of the PSAC record. Walter Fletcher had his second straight 200-yard game and third of the season, finishing with 238 yards and 4 TDs on 29 carries. Jake Sisson threw for 465 yards, the third-highest single-game total. The senior completed 29-of-40 passes with 5 TDs. Three of the scoring passes went to James Clark, who set game records for receptions (17) and yards receiving (289). Ta'Nauz Gregory added 7 receptions for 137 yards and 2 TDs. It's the second straight week both wideouts went over 100 yards receiving. Andrew Tomko came in and threw an 11-yard TD pass to Koran Williams, the first career touchdown for both. Edinboro finished the day with 349 yards rushing and 477 yards passing.

BREAKING DOWN THE GAME
  • A wild first half of the opening quarter saw the two teams score twice in the first eight minutes for a 13-13 tie. Walter Fletcher opened the scoring with a 65-yard touchdown run on the opening play of the game, giving Edinboro a 7-0 lead. Seton Hill responded four plays later as Jarvis McClam caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Christian Strong. Nick Pettigrew blocked the extra point, with Edinboro leading 7-6 less than two minutes into the game.
  • Edinboro needed eight plays to cover 73 yards on their ensuing possession. Sisson threw the first of his five touchdown passes, a 32-yarder to James Clark on a fly pattern down the right sideline. Mike Cushma's PAT attempt was blocked, with Edinboro leading 13-6. Back came the Griffins, going 59 yards on seven plays, with McClam accounting for the touchdown on a four-yard run at the 7:39 mark of the first quarter.
  • The teams would each tack on a touch in the first three minutes of the second quarter, but it was a quarter that Edinboro would ultimately dominate. The Fighting Scots grabbed a 20-13 advantage with 13:25 left in the quarter. Ta'Nauz Gregory did the honors after Edinboro forced a Seton Hill punt. The Scots needed just three plays to cover the 86 yards. The last 82 were courtesy of  Gregory, as the sophomore hauled in a pass on 3rd-and-6 at his own 40 and outran four defenders.
  • Less than a minute later, the Griffins knotted the score at 20-20 as Strong and Deandre Smith combined on a 64-yard scoring pass with 12:46 left.
Those would be the last points put on the board by Seton Hill. Edinboro, meanwhile, would score two more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 34-20 lead at the half. The first drive was 10 plays for 65 yards, and the second 12 for 63 yards, and both ended with Fletcher scoring runs. The first was on a 10-yard run, as the drive was kept alive thanks to a 16-yard completion from Sisson to Clark down to the SHU 28 on a 4th-and-3 play.
Fletcher's third score of the afternoon and second of the quarter followed the first of two interceptions by DeVon Groves on a tipped ball by Aaron Rogers. Fletcher's seventh run of the drive was a two-yard TD run with 3:23 remaining in the half.
  • Edinboro added 21 more points in the third quarter to squash any Seton Hill comeback hopes. After Maurice Sims threw Evan Byrd for a seven-yard loss on 4th-and-1 at the EU 31, Fletcher burst 59 yards to the four on the next play. Three Fletcher runs later resulted in another two-yard scoring run and a 41-20 lead with 9:45 left in the period.
  • The Sisson-to-Clark combo accounted for the next two scores and a 55-20 lead after three quarters. The first capped a six-play, 79-yard drive, ending with 39-yard TD pass. After a three-and-out for Seton Hill, the Fighting Scots marched 65 yards on seven plays. This time Sisson found Clark open in the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown catch.
  • Edinboro would score two more touchdowns in a five minute span early in the fourth quarter. Both scores were set up by interceptions, the first by Brandon Anderson and the second courtesy of Groves. Gregory caught his second touchdown pass of the day from Sisson, a two-yarder, to end a seven-play, 73-yard drive that featured a 46-yard completion to Clark.
  • Groves' second pickoff of the day led to a 31-yard drive engineered by backup quarterback Andrew Tomko. The redshirt freshman threw his first career touchdown pass on a 4th-and-8 play, an 11-yarder to Koran Williams. It was the first touchdown reception for Williams.

GAME NOTES
  • The Edinboro offense had nine scoring drives of 60-or-more yards and finished with a school-record 826 yards. That figure was two yards shy of the all-time PSAC record for total offense in a game. The Fighting Scots actually surpassed that figure with 830 yards on a 56-yard run by Kyle Galyk to the SHU 4 late in the game. Edinboro proceeded to take three knees, in the process losing four yards to finish with 826.
  • Edinboro has now scored 118 points over the last two games, with 49 against Slippery Rock and 69 vs. Seton Hill. That's the highest point total in a two-game stretch since the 1994 team scored 126 points in back-to-back games.
  • After a slow start, the Edinboro defense made some adjustments and totally shut down Seton Hill after the early stages of the second quarter. The Griffins ended the day with 310 total yards, with 232 yards and three touchdowns on their first four possessions. The final nine drives, not counting a seven-second possession to end the half, resulted in 65 yards, with three interceptions, five punts, and a turnover on downs.
  • Edinboro did not punt all afternoon, and every possession reached Seton Hill territory.
  • While taking control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring Seton Hill, 21-7, the Fighting Scots held the ball for 11 minutes, 13 seconds.
James Clark and Ta'Nauz Gregory each finished with 100 yards receiving for the second straight week. Clark had a school record 289 yards, while Gregory had a career-high 137 yards. Clark has six 100-yard receiving games this season and 11 for his career, while it marked Gregory's third in 2017 and the sixth of his career. Ernest Priester holds the school records with seven 100-yard games in 1990 and 12 for his career.
Jake Sisson completed 29-of-40 passes for 465 yards with 5 TDs. It was his fifth game with 400-or-more yards and the ninth-time he has thrown four-or-more touchdowns in a game.
  • Edinboro had two ballcarriers with 100 yards rushing for the first time since 2008 when Ulysses Davis (154) and Michael Battles (115) accomplished the fete against Millersville. Walter Fletcher ran for 238 yards and Kyle Galyk finished with 105 yards.
  • Walter Fletcher posted his third 200-yard game of the season and second in a row. He had 241 yards last week against Slippery Rock and finished Saturday with 238 yards on 29 carries with 4 TDs. The redshirt sophomore now has five straight 100-yard efforts, one shy of the record of six held by Andre Burke. Over that five-game stretch, Fletcher has rushed for 1,006 yards with 14 TDs.
  • The Edinboro secondary continued to excel. DeVon Groves had a pair of interceptions, along with eight tackles, two for losses. His running mate at safety, Brandon Anderson, had an interception to go with six tackles, giving him a team-high 85 for the season.
  • Edinboro picked up its first win of the season on the road while being undefeated at home at 5-0.
  • The Edinboro offensive line did not allow a sack for the fifth time this season. The Fighting Scots have allowed six sacks all year.
  • For the eighth time in nine games, a member of the secondary led the team in tackles, Maurice Sims led the way for the second straight week with nine tackles, including 3.5 for losses.

THE RECORD BOOK
  • Edinboro assaulted the record book on Saturday:
  • The 69 points scored are the third-highest single-game total. Edinboro defeated Mercyhurst, 74-13, in 1983, and recorded a 70-19 win over Lock Haven in 2007.
  • After becoming the first ballcarrier with 1,000 yards rushing since 2004, Walter Fletcher boosted his season total to 1,437 yards, which ranks sixth in a season and is 276 yards shy of the school record of 1,713 yards held by Andre Burke. He has 16 touchdowns rushing, which is tied for fourth in his season. Fletcher finished with 238 yards rushing, which is the seventh-highest single-game total, and his 4 TDs is tied for second. He now has three of the top 11 single-game rushing totals. In less than two full seasons, the redshirt sophomore already ranks ninth in career rushing (1,986) and eighth in rushing TDs (22).
  • James Clark continues to climb the career receiving charts. He set school records with 17 catches for 289 yards with 3 TDs. He has moved into third place in career receptions (155), fourth in receiving yards (2,220), and tied for second in receiving touchdowns (22).  Clark has 82 receptions this season, good for second in a season, and his 1,101 yards is third in a season. He has 11 TDs receiving, tied for third and matching his total of 2016. He has caught eight-or-more passes in seven games.
  • Jake Sisson remained third in career passing yards, boosting his career total to 8,015 yards after completing 29-of-40 passes for 465 yards with 5 TDs. In addition, Sisson is third in career total offense with 8.412 yards and moved into second place in career touchdown passes (78). His 465 yards passing in a game ranks third in a game, as does his 475 yards in total offense. His five touchdown passes are one shy of his own school record.

UP NEXT

  • Edinboro returns home for the last time in 2017, hosting California(Pa.) in the final home game on Saturday, November 4. Kickoff is set for 12 noon at Sox Harrison Stadium. Seven seniors making their final home appearance will be honored in pregame ceremonies.
  • California(Pa.) rallied for a 31-21 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-2 record in the PSAC.
  • The Fighting Scots are undefeated at home in 2017 with a 5-0 record. Edinboro has not gone undefeated at home since the 2005 team won all six home games.
  • For Edinboro to finish with an unblemished home record, the Fighting Scots will have to snap a 12-game losing streak to Calfornia(Pa.). The Vulcans made it 12 straight wins over Edinboro with a 52-7 triumph at Adamson Stadium last year. The last time Edinboro defeated Cal was 2004, a 42-28 victory at Sox Harrison Stadium. That ended a string of three straight wins for the Fighting Scots in the series.
