Sisson Throws Pair of Touchdowns on Senior Day But Fighting Scots Suffer 30-13 Loss to California(Pa.)

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  California(Pa.) 30, Edinboro 13
  • Records:  Edinboro (6-4, 4-3 PSAC West), California(Pa.) (8-2, 5-2 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. – Sox Harrison Staduium
  • The Short Story:  California(Pa.) scored the final 20 points of the game to extend its winning streak to 13 games against Edinboro. One week after totaling a school record 826 yards against Seton Hill, the Edinboro offense was limited to a season-low 176 yards by a Cal defense that recorded six sacks and stopped Edinboro on two drives inside their ten yard-line in the fourth quarter.  The Vulcans were able to take advantage of a pair of breakdowns in the punting game plus a fumble to score 13 points on short drives. The loss was the first at Sox Harrison Stadium this season and spoiled Senior Day for seven seniors. The Vulcans kept alive their NCAA playoff hopes with the victory.

BREAKING DOWN THE GAME
  • Edinboro scored on its first possession of the game, marching 65 yards on seven plays, to take a 6-0 lead at the 10:21 mark of the first quarter. The defense forced a three-and-out by Cal, and the offense responded with a 26-yard scoring pass from Jake Sisson to Ta'Nauz Gregory.  Mike Cushma's extra point attempt was blocked.
  • Cal appeared to respond with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Mike Keir to Luke Smorey on the ensuing series, but the touchdown was called back due to an offensive pass interference call. The Vulcans would reach paydirt on their next series. They drove 51 yards on just five plays, using a 40-yard hookup between Keir and Smorey to reach the Edinboro 1. Jalen bell scored on the next play, and Will Brazill's PAT was good for a 7-6 lead with 2:41 left in the first quarter.
  • The Vulcans took advantage of a failed fake punt to take a 10-6 lead early in the second quarter. Cushma was thrown for a nine-yard loss on the punt fake, giving Cal the ball at the Edinboro 21. The Edinboro defense would rise up and limit the Vulcans to a 33-yard field goal by Brazill. That gave Cal a 10-6 lead with 14:53 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Edinboro put together its best drive of the afternoon on the ensuing series. The Fighting Scots regained the lead at 13-10 thanks to a 12-play, 71-yard march. Sisson completed seven passes on the drive, including a four-yarder to James Clark to convert a 4th-and-2. Three plays later, Blake Reddick hauled in his first career touchdown on a six-yard pass from Sisson. Cushma's extra point made it 13-10 with 10:25 to play in the half.
  • Cal took the lead for good thanks to a nearly six-minute scoring drive late in the half. The Vulcans took over near midfield and went 53 yards on 11 plays, culminating in a two-yard scoring run by Bell. The drive was kept alive by a pass interference call against Edinboro on a 3rd-and-13 play, giving the Vulcans a first down at the EU 11. Bell carried five straight times from there to score his second touchdown with 1:25 left in the second quarter.
  • An Edinboro turnover on the first possession of the third quarter led to a 24-13 lead for the Vulcans at the 12:34 of the period. Koran Williams' fumble following a pass completion from Sisson was scooped up and returned by DeVonte Suber to the Edinboro three. On the very next play, Keir threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Smorey in the back of the end zone.
  • Cal would add two more Brazill field goals in the fourth quarter. The first was a 34-yarder with 7:31 remaining to cap a 53-yard, nine-play drive. The second was from 19 yards out with 3:17 to play. The Boro defense rose up to hold the Vulcans to a field goal after Cal took over at the EU 18. Cushma was deep in the end zone on a punt, and was forced to run following a high snap. He was brought down short of the first down.
