Coleman Scores 30 Points to Lead Edinboro to 88-86 Upset of Eighth-Ranked Shippensburg

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with one of the heavyweights of the PSAC on Sunday afternoon, and were able to deliver the knockout punch with a late surge, upsetting eighth-ranked Shippensburg, 88-86, at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC. Shippensburg fell to 3-1 and is 1-1 in the PSAC.

The victory is the second for fifth-year head coach against a ranked team, and the biggest for an Edinboro team. The last time a Fighting Scot edition won over a ranked opponent since a 79-77 overtime win over 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.) in 2014-15 season.

Shippensburg came in as the defending PSAC champion and reached the NCAA Atlantic Region semifinals a year ago, finishing with a school-record 27-4 ledger. The Raiders feature PSAC East Player of the Year Dustin Sleva.

Anthony Coleman singlehandedly kept the Fighting Scots in the game early as the junior guard scored the first 17 points of the game for Edinboro, as it was Coleman 17, Shippensburg 16 with just under seven minutes gone in the game. Coleman made his first seven shots, and six of those were 3-pointers.

A see-saw first half saw nine lead changes and five ties, with Edinboro leading by as many as six points. But the Raiders scored the final seven points of the half, with Justin McCarthur scoring five points, to take a 45-38 lead.

Shippensburg looked to deliver the knockout punch in the second half, boosting the lead to ten points on three occasions, the last at 61-51 with 13:55 remaining.

The Fighting Scots battled back to within a point at 68-67 with 9:27 remaining thanks to a 16-7 run. What made the rally even more impressive was that All-American Jaymon Mason was sitting on the bench with foul trouble. The Edinboro lineup included a pair of freshmen, Jaryn Simpson and Alex Jay, and both played key roles. Simpson's layup pulled the Scots to within 65-61, and Jay's second 3-pointer in the run made it a one-point game at 68-67.

Sleva scored five straight points as Shippensburg built the lead back up to 78-73 with 4:51 remaining. Edinboro answered with a 5-0 run of its own on a layup by Frank off a pretty feed from Mason, followed by a Mason three to knot the score at 78-78 with 3:26 remaining.

A pair of Sleva free throws with 1:33 to play gave Shippensburg its last lead at 82-80. Mason's second 3-pointer of the game gave the Scots the lead for good at 83-82 and started a string of seven straight points.

Mike Beck came up with a steal at midcourt, and Jay would hit a pair of free throws after being fouled on a drive. Sleva missed a three, and Coleman drove down the lane for a layup and an 87-82 lead with 32 seconds left.

Shippensburg would pull to within a possession at 87-84 on a pair of Clay Conner free throws with 25 seconds left. Keshawn Liggins was fouled three seconds later and made one-of-two free throws for an 88-84 lead.

Keyshawn Liggins finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.
The Raiders would miss a pair of 3-pointers but come up with the offensive rebound. John Castello was fouled on a 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds to play. He made the first two to cut the margin to two points. Castello missed the third attempt intentionally but it glanced out of bounds and was Edinboro's ball. The Fighting Scots inbounded to run out the clock.

Coleman finished with a career-high 30 points to lead all scorers. The junior guard, a transfer from Cincinnati State CC, made 11-of-16 field goals, including 8-of-13 3-pointers. Liggins, a transfer from Idaho State, added his second straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, adding six assists. Mason, despite playing just 27 minutes due to foul trouble, and also still hampered by an injury, finished with 10 points.

Junior forward Jack Frank battled inside and finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Jay played 13 minutes and contributed eight points. Fellow freshman Simpson played 22 minutes and had four points and four assists.

Sleva lived up to his press clippings as the 6'8" senior led four Raiders in double figures with 26 points, adding nine rebounds. McCarthur added 21 points, making 5-of-10 3-pointers. Conner and Jay Biss scored 10 points apiece.

Edinboro shot 50.8 percent for the game (32-of-63), including a sizzling 58.1 percent in the second half (18-of-31) when the Scots outscored SU, 50-41. The Scots made 15-of-34 3-pointers and were 9-of-14 from the line. Shippensburg shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61), including 10-of-30 on 3-pointers, and was 18-of-21 at the line.

The Raiders held a slight 35-32 advantage on the glass, but Edinboro committed just five turnovers and forced nine. The Scots took full advantage of those miscues, outscoring SU 19-4 on turnovers.

Edinboro will take a break for Thanksgiving before returning to the hardcourt on Saturday, November 25, hosting Lake Erie in a non-conference tilt. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 3 p.m.
